So tonight I attempted to remove the cassette on my powertap hub and it did not go as expected. I have a chain whip holding the cassette, I have cog remover and a freewheel tool wrench… I know these are the right tools since I took the cassette off my other wheel and put it on my powertap in the first place. I feel like I’m using tremendous force and nothing is happening so I stopped. Now I notice that the powertap slides apart easily exposing the greased pawls. That doesn’t seem right. OK I give up on changing the cassette… can I just put this back together or do I need have someone else fix it.
Put the nut back on the axel so that the freehub body does not pull away. Then, use your chain whip and your cassette tool to remove the cogset. You may want to take a QR and put it in the hub from the freewheel side to keep the cassette tool from slipping.
Is the freehub normally just held together by the tension of the quick release? On my other wheel it is firmly attached.
Yes, there is a knurled 15mm nut as well as a washer that is threaded onto the axle. You can check page 36 of this http://www.saris.com/pdfManuals/360.pdf to see where it sits. This is what will hold the hub against the frame and you DO NOT remove it to take off the cogs.
OK thanks, It was just concerning when that part came apart so easily but the part I’m trying to get lose will not come off for all the world.
Rightie tightie…leftie loosey…
And you are trying to remove the lock ring yes?
I was trying to remove the lock ring so that I could swap the cassette, but if I haven’t broken anything I’m calling it a night. It is just not budging.
Bike Shop tips…101. Put the cassette tool in a vice. Then put the chain whip on and use the diameter of the rim to get it to break free. Real knuckle saver.
