Newbie (6)

New kid here.
61 years old and I figured its about time to get started on my dream of Triathlons.
I’m thinking that a Y membership would be in order.
I’ve ran marathons but never biked or swam distance.
Certainly never swam open water more than 50 feet.
Maybe I’m not alone.
All advice welcome.
PS I’m in North Carolina.

Does the Y have a pool?

Yes
I guess that would be a requirement.

First, make sure your primary care doctor says you’re healthy enough.

Then, swim. Get lessons to help your form and efficiency if need be. It doesn’t have to be perfect but the swim will spike your heart rate and can exhaust you quickly. People drown and die. A sprint tri is typically 750 meters - 15 pool laps. But open water has no lane ropes or pool walls to grab.

Everything else is secondary. Get a decent bike (doesn’t have to be a tri bike) and ride to build some endurance. Practice riding after swimming, running after riding, etc to get the feel.

Then pick an easy and nearby sprint tri, ideally with a pool swim.

Thanks Fed
.

Are there any other pools near you that would be less expensive?

Welcome! Are there any tri clubs in your area? They may have training groups and could be a good local source of information.

Tri Club?
How would one going about finding such an item?
Kinda like the Honecomb Hideout?
Are old enough to remember that?

The Google is your friend.

Pools in my area.
Pool across the street from the house but they are open Labor Day-Memorial Day. $375.00 per year.

I could check with Eddie Frye the Shoe Guy (local legend).
For both the club and the pool.

The welcome wagon pulled up!
Thanks for all’yall
!

I’ll check, thanks.

I have been reading and looks like its all about the kiddies.
The YMCA would be the logical choice. Maybe I could get a senior discount.
