Nice. Thanks for the previews. I guess I have to wait until February 21st for the Ultra Race 3.0!!!
Anyone know the difference between the Zoot Ultra TT 4.0 (or the 3.0 ofr that matter) to the Ultra Kalani?
I ordered my first pair of Zoots in November based on Tom’s review of the Ultra Kane - I ordered the Ultra Kalani. Finally just got the shoes this week and I had to send them back for a 1/2 size larger. I’m currently running is Asics Sky Speeds.
Now I’m wondering of the Ultra TT’s may have been a better option.

TT is designed to be a tri shoe, Kalani is a run shoe…
The big differences are the TT is about 1.5 oz lighter, has a 10mm drop (instead of 12), has a quick lace system, and holes in the bottom to drain water Both have the bare-fit sockless liner

Thanks,
I think I’ll stick with the Kalani this time round and if I like them maybe try the TT’s next.

Sadly, the Ovwa can be found at roadrunner (by doing a google search), but can’t yet be preordered. I was hoping to have it as an option for an upcoming marathon, but maybe it’s not being released at the same time as the others?
I had to send my Kanes back for a 1/2 size up and could not be happier. I’ve been pretty loyal to Zoot since 2009 and they just seem to keep getting better. I wish the Kanes came with drain holes, 'cause I’d love to race with them.
However, I’m not fond of all the yellow on all the stability shoes…
the ovwa is coming in a couple weeks later, should be available at road runner and other zoot footwear dealers by mid march.

I have been using the TT for training runs up to 5 miles and in my 5k races. Sunday, I did a 10 mile run in them and they felt fine. Should I move to the Kalani for increased mileage? Would like a shoe for upcoming half in April. Past long runs have been in NB 1064, but they feel so much heavier than the Zoots.

I’m just an athlete sponsored by Zoot, so I’m probably not the best one to provide advice on topics like that. I cna tell you all about the shoes, but not what is best for your training/racing. That said, my suggestion would be to very slowly add mileage and see how you do. Since you did 10 miles without issue, I’m sure you can race a half marthton in them. The question will be if you can do all of your training in them. Or as an alternative use the TTs for half of your weekly milage and the NB1064 for the rest, then slowly move to doing all of the running in the TTs over time.
I personally do almost all of my training in the Ultra Race and race in the Speed or Race depending on distance. But I’ve been running in lightweight shows for 3+ years now and it was a gradual transition.
Thanks for the advice and makes since regarding transition to the one shoe over time.
So, If i like the Kapilani, what is the corresponding tri or racing shoe?

The Kapilani is a stability shoe… therefore the Ultra Tempo 4 (~1.5 oz lighter) is the closest Tri shoe to it. You could also try the new Ultra OVWA (~2 oz lighter) as well.
My TT and Tempo both arrived yesterday. Most of the (minor) issues I’ve had with Zoot shoes in the past have been corrected in the new models. For me, less heel slipping/rubbing, more (vertical) room in the big toe area. Both are very nice shoes, even nicer than previous years.
Tgrunnin,
I have been using the TT 3.0’s since mid last year as I was looking for a light weight trainer/race shoe. I used the 2008 Ultra, race flat, the all yellow version for my race flats up to the half distance for the past 2 seasons. I haven’t had any problems with those, but they have quite a few miles in them now and I wanted to get the 2010 UltraSpeed but can’t find them anywhere in my size (11.5). Back to the TT 3.0’s though, I trained in them for my marathon last year and ran the marathon in them. Had no problems and love the shoes. I have tried to find those to get another pair but no one seems to have them left. Going to order the 4.0’s and hope they are just as good as the 3.0’s. I say slowly up your mileage in the TT 3.0’s and see how you feel.

You work for RRS or something?

Good deal. Will probably stay with the TT as they are working for me. Although went out for 4 miles one day this week and came in with a bloody mess at the top of the shoe in the rear. Didn’t feel it at all while running and only saw it when I took the shoe off.
So, my only complaint about Zoot’s products is their website. It simply lacks information. I’m hoping that one of the sponsored athletes on here might know the answer to this; What is the difference between the Ultra OVWA and the Ultra Tempo, aside from the weight? If the weight is the major difference, then do you have any idea what they did to reduce the weight?
I’ve been running the majority of my longer miles in the Ultra Tempo 3.0, and did my last IM in them. Love the shoe, but should I consider the OVWA as well? I have a Marathon coming up and like the idea of the lighter weight shoe if it would fit/feel similar to the Tempo.
Any advice is appreciated.
I had a bloody mess after Wildflower, but that was in the Ultras. That run course is not a typical run course and I would blame it on the course rather than the shoe. I have run other halfs in the Ultras and had no problem with blisters or a bloody mess. I wish this years Ultras had a different color scheme, they are quite ugly. I think I might give the Aasic race flats a shot as they come in around 4.6oz I think. I will stick with the TT’s though for everything over 10K though. If I can come across a pair of Ultraspeeds in 11.5 or 12 from last year I would get those instead of the Aasics but can’t seem to find any. Zoot wasn’t of much help as they were out and said I needed to contact each dealer individually, I tried all online retailers but to no avail.
As I understand it, the difference between the Ovwa and Tempo is that the Ovwa is more of a pared-down stability shoe intended for racing, whereas the Tempo is Zoot’s more versatile – yet still race-worthy – stability tri shoe.
The Ovwa weighs a bit less and has a thinner midsole by 2 mm. I run in Zoot’s neutral shoes, so I haven’t had experience with the Tempo. If I used Zoot’s stability shoes, I’d probably race in the Ovwa for up to halfs, and train and race IMs in the Tempo. Hopefully a Zooter with direct experience can chime in and elaborate or correct me…
