Ridgewood cycles is a good shop in northern NJ, Drew is a good guy, and they have a great selection. Strictly bike is a solid shop, but expensive. However, you can get a coffee while you wait, which is sweet. Unfortunately, their road race team has something of a bad reputation.

In NY, Babylon bike shop is good, (I work there, so this is a shameless plug, but I was a patron before employee, and actually believe what I’m saying) as the head fitter/owner Mike is the best in the game, and our service is extremely personal- ask for doug, the other owner- he can be cranky, but gets stuff done. Pro athletes are on staff as well- MTBers and Triathletes. The number of re-fits we do from other fitters is actually more than the fits we do from our own shop. If you want a shop who will sell you the flashiest, go somewhere else. If you want a shop who will get you as fast as you can be for the least $$, come on by.

It’s a bit further south than the area you’re looking but well worth the trip.

Brielle Cyclery in Brielle, NJ. http://briellecyclery.com/

Unbelievable selection of tri-specific gear, equipment, and bikes and home base for many of the tri clubs in the region. Awesome wrenchers too. I travel about 4 hours a few times a year to go there and “re-supply” with gear and knowledge.

Yea, I found Redgewood cycles in a few searches and its pretty close to me so might stop in the weekend. alos Fort Lee is not far so will probably go there also. If I can get two long island some time soon I will def stop at Babylon and Sunrise

Thanks

It’s like a kid walking into a candy store or FAO Schwartz. Your eyes will bulge and your heart will race.

Just don’t let Felix get too frisky with you during the fitting.

have to second tweickelberg’s recomendation of Babylon Bike Shop. you walk in to see the two fastest triathletes in the area, strongest cyclist in the area, 6-year pro MTB rider, incredibly knowledgable tri/cycling coach, and a few comedians. Flashy is something they will do if u wish but foremost they will cater to your needs. They have helped me tremendously over the years with road/tri/mtb and ive seen them help many others. Free fit when you buy the bike from them. Check them out!

Save yourself some time and trouble and go see Jonathan Blyer at Acme Bicycle Co. before visiting or buying from any shop in the area. He’ll get your fit dialed in before you spend money on the “wrong” bike (since you can make most any bike fit). Once you’ve been fit and have your numbers, he can make recommendations on the manufacturers whos frames would fit your coordinates best or, if interested, get you set up on a custom Guru. And if you happen to buy a bike elsewhere before seeing him, be sure to see him regardless for your fit.

Note: I’m marginally biased since you can see I’m sponsored, but I paid for a fit by Jonathan before I was sponsored and before I knew him. He does do great work and is worth the investment.

What did you think of the Retul fit? Worth it?

–Alan

What’s more important is finding someone that has experience with bike fitting. Just having the Retul system alone isn’t enough, the fitter really has to have a good eye and experience.

If you have those 2 components and can afford it I think it’s worth it. Plus they store all your fit data to apply to your other bikes (if you have more than one).

If you want to test a bunch of different wet suits, then you might try what I did: SBR in NYC has a endless pool that you can try a bunch of different suits in, and then pick the one you like. Tim

I fixed it for you.

From my point of view, its OK for you to have a different take from me on a vendor, but its not OK to change my words. Tim

Sorry I guess I did overstep a bit there .

Sunrise Tri in Long Island.

They know what they are talking about, offer good fits, and will sell you whatever is best for you. Honest and straightforward people with no attitude.
