New York City readers

are you racing? or spectating? if the former, good luck! we’ll be covering you! if the latter, we’re providing live coverage of the race, and i’ll need a few spotters at strategic points along the course upon whom i can rely. this, because our team includes folks who will shoot the race, and follow the race, but we need stationary spotters who can identify the leaders, and time and write down the deficits between the leaders. and, you need a cell phone

if you’re available, can you PM or email me?

I’ll be volunteering in some capacity at the race. Not sure what my tasks will be yet, but I might be able to multitask and help you out

I will ask my wife She will be cheering 4 me. but
we will be up early in the morning.

I think my wife’s planning to come cheer for people at the race, so she might be able to help to.

Yay racewives!

Dan when and which races are you looking for help with because I will be moving back to Hoboken (north) NJ in August and can help out in the future.

Hey Dan,

I’ll be there and I’ll have Sam’s US cellphone so you can call me on it for updates. But I’ll only follow the womens race, I find it too hard to keep track of the mens and womens accuratley, and give Sam splits too.

I’ll PM ya later in the week when I know what her cellphone number is.

Cheers.

Dan,

I’m the Volunteer Team Captain for timing and awards. I’ll be taking splits all day long for the whole race; likely no one will have an opportunity to better know the times than me as I’ll be having constant and continual updates. One of my friends is working under me as a volunteer; while I fear I’ll be too busy to keep updating the ST ice cream van my friend will. Let me know how you’d like to get the updates as he’ll be there with his blackberry ready to send off the info as I get it.

Rich- It’s good to know the volunteers will be working for slowtwitch.com instead of giving 100% effort to their responsibility. So psyched you’re taking the Team Captain duties seriously and pimping out your people.

I think my bike will need to be washed afterwards and my wetsuit rinsed out- can you spare anyone else?

Bobby,

My friend who is helping out was a last minute ‘extra’ addition; should he be needed in any capacity the morning of that might interfere with quickly relaying split info, I won’t hesitate to have him do it. However if it is feasible to help update the ST readers I’m happy to have him do it; I’m feeling confident that both the awards and timing portions of my capacities will be brought off with the utmost success and professionalism. I’m fairly sure that he’ll be able to spare 1 or 2 moments here and there to text off some splits quickly. And if I find that he can’t then he won’t. But at least the option is there. I am taking my Team Captain duties very seriously and everything that is being asked of me will be done to 100% of my effort and ability.

Nice Backpedal!

You should go into politics if you’re not already. You’ve dazzled me with your reply so i’ll ignore your original post where you commit someone to ST.

(I would like to keep that option open to have my bike cleaned though. It’s not as cool sending times to ST though)

Hi Bobby,

I thought volunteers were exactly that… volunteers. They can volunteer to give 100% of their time (which would be ideal) or 99%, 90%, 80% of their time. Whatever percentage of time devoted to the event is usually much appreciated by any race or event director. The other “non-volunteer” percentage of time, they can and should feel comfortable doing what they feel like doing. Like enjoying the event, taking in the view, take a leak, have an ice cream cone, text ST with time splits or wash your bike.

If “100% volunteer time” from start to finish is required from all volunteers by an event director… they might not see that volunteer the next time around.

Great attitude! Looks like you’re the guy to go to in a tough spot. When I read about empty aid stations I’ll have an idea who was volunteering that day.

FWIW- The “volunteers” at this event are getting guaranteed entry into next years event, and TC’s are getting paid entry into next years event. Very few folks are doing it out of the kindness of their hearts and for the love of the sport. You should talk to some folks who remember the first NYC Tri where the volunteers decided to “give whatever percentage” of their time to the event. It wasn’t pretty.

Bobby,

I’m taking the NY bar exam next week. I couldn’t race because I didn’t want to race so close to the bar. Thus I decided to volunteer; for the love of the sport and to give the race my all. In any even Slowman hasn’t gotten in touch so I’m just going to leave it be; I’m certain that there won’t be any problem getting split info (especially since helping update official split info is part of my job and I intend to do it well). My friend the ‘extra volunteer’ will still be pitching in with 100% effort to get out splits, but for the official race. The caliber of volunteers and Volunteer Team Captain’s is incredibly high; I expect nothing but a tight and well run event (and this year sans jellyfish). I can say from my own personal experience last year racing the race (not the actual first year of the race) that all the volunteers did a great job, and I expect the same this year. This race can’t be run without the volunteers; it requires a truly massive effort as the logistics of racing in NYC are nightmarish as you might imagine. You get to race the race focusing only on going as fast as possible thanks to countless volunteers, don’t forget that.

Aha- a lawyer! I should have known!

I see we’re beating this up pretty good and you’d probably like to get to studying. But:

  1. You posted you’ll gladly use one of your charges to report times to ST
  2. I post a wisea** comment calling you on it
  3. You then do a duck and cover
  4. And now you deflect

I see they’ve taught you well in school. You’re gonna go far. (you ALREADY have double billing down!)

But back to the race & volunteering- I’m sure you’re gonna do a great job, just like some of us have done in previous years. I just find it humorous that as a TC you commit your people in advance to do something else other than what you’re there for. It’s really that simple.

Thanks In advance for volunteering and good luck on the bar!

I was wondering if any one has any good ideas how to be a spectator at this race. The bike area is at a different location then the finish of the race I believe. How far a walk is it from the transition to the finish line? I wonder how parking is in this area?

transition to finish line is a bit more than a mile
.

Thanks for letting me know.

At the Sheraton hotel right now, been here since yesterday .As of right now the race in NYC is a tie between all 3675.5 competitors. Expo ( Philly had more freebies.) is very cool. Had a nice little 6 mile run with my wife this morning in central park It is going to be a nice weekend in the city . Hopefully it is this nice for all the athletes at IMLP. Will update more Sunday.

If you watch near the exit of T1 you’ll see people a few times. You can then book it over 72nd street and into Central park to catch the end, but it’s a mile over, so book it.

For parking, get there EARLY if you want free street parking in the area. If not early, like 5 am early, don’t even bother trying to find any parking.

Good luck to everyone racing (especially my SBR teammates!!) I was working at the Expo Fri and Sat for SBR Multisports, check out their store near Central Park for a wicked raffle. The money goes to help the Wounded Warrior fund, so it’s a good cause, and you could win a new bike, wet suit, and a lot of other cool stuff.

Good luck everyone!!
