Here you have a new video from Gustav Iden.
After the run session he is doing a Q&A about IMCal, Kona, running, etc, etc.

Here you have his 1k splits on his 3x5k run session.

These videos are quite well done! Kudos Mikal!
So Gustav is quite the character and quite likeable. These videos are going to take him to the next level in terms of marketability.
Also, have to notice they use Maurten as well (we know Jan does). Obviously Sanders is sponsored by Gatorade at the moment but have to wonder if he’s experimenting with Maurten with Mikal as his coach. We might see an offseason change in sponsorship I’d imagine (unless that Gatorade money is too good).
In Flagstaff we have seen him running in Asics, Brooks, Saucony and Nike. Seems like hes not particularty favoring one brand over the others. Also, how many shoes does he bring with him all over the world for training camps?
That surprised me, I thought athletes at this level generally had shoe sponsors.
On an administrative note, perhaps it would be enough to have one thread about Mikel/Gustav Iden videos? Anybody who wants to always be notified of them can subscribe (like I have).

I think most are not. But at his stature, there’s gotta be one around the corner.
He does have the brand new Oakleys though!
Love that he is seeing if he even likes the full distance before he commits to more. Smart man right there.
Its a great video and interesting he thinks he can catch up with Wurf on the bike. He is a really likeable character.
However - we heard about the Pizza for breakfast but not the coke. We need the issue of coke for breakfast addressing please
Really looking forward to watching the race now - I think these athletes are really benefiting Ironman brand a lot. Hope Ironman are recognising that and they are getting their appearance fees!
Would be really interesting to see what would happen with a bike group of him, Sanders, Long, Skipper, Wurf forming together. Could be spectacular.
Kristian only got an Asics sponsorship AFTER winning the olympic gold in their shoes haha
.
Basically Gatorade and Maurten are sugar water. I think Gatorade has an advantage with having electrolytes and it’s cheaper. Cost probably isn’t a factor as a sponsored athlete, but it’s kind of splitting hairs. I’d be surpised if there is any performance benefit from Maurten relative to Gatorade. Same goes for Powerade and similar products. They’re all glucose based.
False. Maurten has a blend of glucose and fructose, which I believe studies are showing allows you to absorb more carbs per hour than just straight glucose.
There’s like two studies that supports Maurten’s claims. And guess who funded those studies…oh yeah…Maurten. There are also studies that refute Maurten’s claims.
Yeah, I don’t use the drink (literally sugar water for me haha) but last 70.3 I decided to use the gels every second aid station chased with a little water and coke at the other aid station. Took approx 600 cal for 1:32 with zero stomach distress - resulting in the strongest I’ve finished a 70.3 in a LONG time. It’s a different product for sure…
I am most impressed with the sequence at 14min. He is in aero, doing some good speed and the cameraman (Mikal I guess) is on a road bike, sitting up, camera sticking out, having to pass him to get the shot.
How many watts did the cameraman have to put out ?
Is the cameraman on Strava ?
I’m guessing the CDA of the cameraman is twice that of the athlete hence twice the aero watts + acceleration…good thing they have strong cameramen. Talbot would have used a drone

You mentioned catching up to Wurf but won’t he come out of the water ahead of him ? If that is the case he’d eventually get caught and could hop on the train but given Wurf’s bike in Copenhagen it would be a lot to ask for anytime to stick with him.

Cameraman is not totally unfit;) he did win IM Tallinn @ 8:19 some two years ago:) (2019)

Different claims are being conflated here. The glucose/fructose mix is not unique to Maurten and has lots of science behind it. The controversial Maurten claim is about their “hydrogel†technology about which the science is mixed, and all of the supporting science seems to have been sponsored by Maurten.
That surprised me, I thought athletes at this level generally had shoe sponsors.
Shoe sponsors? For Iden the real opportunity is a hat sponsor!
*me a world champion … you can do whatever *
I’m about to become the most ardent fanboy of all time. Love this guy. It all started with a statement somwhere that his favourite pre-race breakfast is nutella bread. And now pizza.

I’ve tried several different gels on the bike and Maurten goes down the easiest. I’m not that picky, so don’t care much about the flavor, thickness and whatnot. I just want something that I can swallow easily and Maurten fits the bill. SIS is too big to carry on the bike and others are too sticky so my mouth feels terrible for a while. I’ve been using it since Kipchoge got sponsored by Maurten first and I’ve been liking a lot. You can tell they are marketing it very aggressively because you can get them at Ironman race aid stations and Ironman Village now.
