New to slowtwitch (1)

Hey everyone,
A friend told me about this site because I’m looking for a tri bike. This is my first time on a forum site like this and don’t really have a good idea of how they work. Any help with this newbie here would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome. Do a bunch of reading and use the search feature. If you search some topics before posting, especially about tri bikes, you’ll get a heap of info. Good luck.

Tribikes work a lot like a regular bike. Except you set the seat up really high and take all the spacers out of the stem. But you still pedal it :0)

Carve out roughly 8 hours from your day on Oct 13th, tune into Kona (Ironman World Championship), follow along with the denziens of Slowtwitch here in the forums.

Good times to be had.

You will also find out that the time you spent on ST would have served you better training. Ok just kidding with the last one.

Seriously Zack…why don’t you read his question again… he’s not asking how or what to post on ST…he’s asking about a tri bike…why not help him out (since you seem to be the resident expert on just about everything) rather than post some smart ass response.

If there are any results, from any event, in any discipline, anywhere in the world that you want to talk about, put “Spoiler Alert” in the title

Whatever you do, never, under ANY circumstances, mention

Crap. I, too, went straight to SAR ; since I really don’t have anything worthwhile to contribute vis-à-vis tri-bikes.

Once the original question is answered, and the OP is comfortable here, however, that advice might be prudent

Oh and pink text is not mean to be taken (too) seriously.

Welcome - plenty of info (good and otherwise) via the search…and lots you never knew you wanted to know about until you stumble upon it.

Do at least a few tris (sprints and Olys) with what ever bike you can get the use of before you get a tri bike. If after doing a few triathlons you think that this is some thing that you really want to do for at least a few years, then shop around for the most aero bike that will fit you and you can afford. Of the three forms of forward locomotion you will be doing, the bike is where spending more will get you more speed. There is only a little performance advantage between running shoes and between wet suits, but in the world of bikes money buys speed. Look at the Kona Pier bike count threads on this forum to give you some ideas as to what the big boys and girls are riding. Best of luck at the races, Tim

Thank you for the info. I just finished my last race of my 2nd season. Ive been on a 1980s Nishiki steel frame. I’m able to keep about 19-20mph avg on that bike and I feel that making the switch will help me gain a bit more speed and help me transition to my run easier. I’m starting to save up and looking for what I fit and like for next season. This is the time of year I might be able to get a good deal, at least that is what i keep hearing. Thanks again.

Welcome, and your seat is too high.

Welcome.
