Hello to all! I joined this site as a product designer first, but also as a Ironman/triathlon enthusiast. I was hoping to be able to ask athletes some questions about equipment, to get a better idea of the sport, as well as the gear and preparation involved. I’m currently working on a project to design a new conceptual TT bike for an Ironman competitor, and I am hoping this is a place I can go to compile good info about what riders want in a new bike.
Is there anyone out there that knows of new, advanced composite materials that could be used for bike frames in the future? Preferably something stronger AND lighter than current carbon fiber options? I’ve seen frames made of both the CF as well as titanium, but it seems as though the process by which the carbon fiber is laid results in a more aerodynamic shape (like the Cervelo’s).
Has anyone seen or heard of new ideas or materials being tested or the like?
I’ve also noticed that one of the ways CF wheels have been designed to reduce air resistance is by dimpling them like golf balls to reduce surface area. Is this treatment also something that could be developed for frames/forks as well?
Thanks for any and all info/input!
