My company is moving me to Nashville, TN. I have been living in Cincinnati, OH for the past 5 years. Any suggestions on areas to live for a triathlete? Local tri groups or groups to ride and run with? Safe place to run and ride for training alone as well? Last but not least, a good gym with lots of swimming lanes. I will be training for HIM and possibly my first IM. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you!

I haven’t included a thread about dating in Nashville. Nashville is awesome (I live 3 hours south but visit every 2-3 months).
Oh, and welcome to slowtwitch. Since you are new (and a girl), I wanted to be helpful instead of just telling you to use the search function. Hope your move to Nashville goes well.
Thank you. I have used it but thought I’d also post something. Very awesome town and look forward to the move!
Where is your job (location) and what is your budget? That will make a difference.
And if you want to meet a women’s cycling team (but we have triathletes too), pm me.
NAC for swimming!
My office is in the La Vergne/Antioche area. Budget would be $1000/month. Take or give some.
I’m interested in the women’s cycling although I primarily cycle with men now.
I’ll look up NAC. What does that stand for?
Thank you!
Welcome! I think you’re going to love it.
There are tons of great places to live…from downtown to the satellite cities. We have lived in the Franklin/Bellevue area for the past 20 years. I have easy access to the Natchez Trace (low traffic) and Edwin/Percy Warner Parks (great running).
Brentwood is nice and there’s a very active tri club there called Brentwood Endurance Triathlon Club (BEAT). They usually put together group bike rides/runs on a weekly basis.
I swim at NAC (Nashville Acquatic Club) … they have a masters/tri group program. AWARE (here on Slowtwitch) is one of the masters/tri coaches at NAC. Of course, there’s the YMCA at multiple locations throughout the city as well as several other fitness clubs.
Let me know if you have any specific questions.
Thanks JoelO, very informative. I will check all these out!
Make sure you sign up for the Music City Triathlon. Team Magic does great races.
Don’t forget the Country Music Marathon (or half) in April.
Hey,
lived here for 3 years. I live close to downtown but highly recommend the NAC swim program. Sure I’m one of the coaches but we have athletes drive from 45 minutes away to swim with us. Usually have 40ish athletes at our 5 am practice on M,W,F and then we also have 6:30 am practice Monday - Friday and then several other options including Saturday and Sunday swims. Open water swims during the summer. Even if you don’t join the swim team and just join the Sportsplex, they have lap swim lanes from 6am - 8pm on most days. The high school teams start coming in around 4pm. But there is typically at least 4-5 lap lanes even when the kids are there. And they have a brand new weight facility with plenty of cardio equipment there.
Red Kite bikes is the best shop in town and extremely knowledgeable. Cool place to hang out as well.
Also, I’m a Realtor so if you need help finding a place to live, just shoot me an email. tony.white@crye-leike.com
Hope your move isn’t too stressful. You will love Nashville.
So now that you’ve been bombarded…stoked to see another triathlete coming to town!
I do coach with NAC (Nashville Aquatic Club) as Joel said. There are a couple other options in town & we’re pretty biased, but our swimmers/athletes encompass the largest group in town & we have a ton of fun. We do have some swimmers on the south side of town as well, at Maryland Farms YMCA in Brentwood. There may be a summer option there but get here first & we can chat more later.
You’ll want to spend a ton of time cycling on the Natchez Trace. We’re lucky to have a few great bike shops around town as well. As Tony mentioned, Red Kite is awesome. I’m also a fan of Trace Bikes over in the Bellevue area (near the Trace). They host some killer group rides that have some fast guys (& chicks) putting down some speedy times. There’s another shop on the south side, RB’s Cyclery in the Cool Springs/Franklin area. Also cool cats, they host a brutal hill ride weekly through the summer. Another favorite is MOAB, locations in Franklin & Murfreesboro. Great dudes there too.
I’m a member of BEAT, a great club that’s based out of the Brentwood area. The entire spectrum of athletes, social & training opportunities abound.
If you’re office is going to be in Antioch/LaVergne…that can be a tough area to live in & commuting can be miserable depending on where you’re coming from. If you’re not averse to backroads, the brentwood, nolensville & east side cool springs might be a great way to have the best of all worlds. Getting to the Trace won’t be super easy, but getting to work & getting to training facilities will be easier & there’s reasonable riding to be found south of town anyway.
Obviously there’s a few of us around here that are always willing to help out. Don’t be afraid to hop right in when you’re local!

I once swam at a massive pool near Vandy. 50m. It’s called the Centennial Sportsplex.

Yes, that’s where NAC is based. Tony & AWARE coach there.
Also:
I think AWARE is spot on in her recommendations as to preferable places to live.
Best bike mechanic in town (IMHO)…Shannon at Red Kite.

There were high quality swimmers in the lanes around me when I was there. Different experience for me vs. my home/rec pool. They had the lanes set up for 25m instead of 50 so it seemed like they had 1000 lanes, if i remember correctly.
