New Slowtwitch Group Ride: Casual Fridays

Come ride with us! Team Every Man Jack has teamed up with Slowtwitch to bring you a new group ride on zwift led by yours truly. A social ride aimed to prep you for a big weekend of training. Hope to see you there!

I’ve never done a group ride in Zwift (only raced a bit last year). What’s the anticipated w/kg of the ride? “Easy” is relative.

So in this ride everyone will be rubberbanded together. You can’t get dropped unless you stop pedaling. It will be a structured workout based on percentages of your FTP setting in zwift. Mostly aerobic, with a few opener type efforts to break the ride up a bit and prep the legs for a big Saturday of riding/racing.

The workouts will be a little different each week. This first one is is a 20 minute warmup, then 3x2’ at 120% with 4’ recovery iirc, then 22 minutes at 75%.

Here’s a link to the ride: https://www.zwift.com/events/view/557811

I should also mention, if you have other plans for Friday, a particular workout or whatever, no problem!! You can still join our ride and chat with us, just take the trainer out of erg mode and execute whatever you want to. As long as you’re pedaling you’ll be kept with the group! Even if you’re sprinting at 10w/kg ;).

Sounds cool. Wish it was a earlier in the AM

I hear ya. Trying to pick a time that works for both East and West coast is hard. This day/timeslot has gotten the most participation from our team (that has members from coast to coast) when we’ve done “meet ups” so we decided to roll with it for this ride.

Great and thanks for doing that, but I often wonder why a casual ride / social ride has a workout structure. Why not just ride chill and chit chat

I was wondering the same thing.

Me too. I’ve never been on a casual ride that has intervals. There are enough workout options on zwift. Just have a slowtwitch shuffle for an easy spin and chat.

Remember the scene in Days of Thunder when Rowdy and Cole are leaving the hospital in wheelchairs, and can’t help but race each other to the door.

Definitely agree with you there, the problem is that you cannot use the “keep everyone together” feature in group rides like you can in meetups unless it’s a structured training ride.

We wanted to definitely do a no drop ride, and without the keep everyone together feature that’s nearly impossible with the wide range of abilities. If you say the ride is a chill 2w/kg ride, well that may be too hard for some but too easy for others.

In workout mode everyone can go their correct easy pace, and can also adjust the % to exactly where they want it while staying with the group.

This too 😂

What are the exact steps to join this ride? I have a Zwift account and been riding in Zwift a few months but this would be my first group ride.
Thank you.

Open companion app
Click on events
At the top right there is a filters button.
Click the filters button, and make sure group workout is CHECKED. (You’ll probably just want to check all of them)

Click apply filters
Toward the top of the events screen, there is an arrow pointing right, this is how you navigate days. Click once (today is Thursday, so tomorrow is Friday)
Once Friday’s events appear, scroll down (they are in time order) until you get to this event: Slowtwitch Indoors: Casual Friday’s
It’s at 9:00 am EST, but it will display in your time zone.
Click on event, once on the event page there is an orange plus button, click that and you are signed up.

To join the ride on Friday, just start riding in Zwift before event starts( it doesn’r matter which world) and there will be a join event button on the bottom left of your screen while you are riding. Click that and it will take you to the event. Try to be spinning in Zwift at least 5 minutes before event starts.

As Sean mentioned: there’s no way to do a “social” ride that is also banded. Your options are either free ride (which turns into the whatever time slot you’re in World Championships) or a structured training event. So we kept the workout mellow with a couple of “openers” thrown in for good measure. Just fire up the Companion app and chat away.

If it’s easier:

1.) Log into your Zwift account on Zwift.com.
2.) Click this link: https://zwift.com/events/tag/slowtwitchindoors/view/557811
3.) Hit the plus icon on the right hand side of the page. Now you’re RSVP’d for the event.
4.) Log into the Zwift app tomorrow AM somewhere between 5 and 10 minutes before the ride.
5.) Once you get into game, it should automatically prompt you as to whether or not you want to head to the start pen for the group ride. You can decline and spin around for a bit, and then hit Join Event when you’re ready.

Have fun!

I have done casual / social rides on Zwift but true they are not for everyone. They even have fences and punt those who ride ahead.

Fence is currently disabled, so ride leaders can’t use it at the moment. It will be nice when they give it back to us.

One more bump for the afternoon crowd. Hope to see y’all tomorrow morning!

I’m hoping to join you guys tomorrow. I’ve been riding zwift for awhile now but this will be my first group type ride.
