New Silca Chisela Computer Mount

New modular computer mount from Silca
.

yeah… i can’t quite comprehend the pricing!

3D printing isn’t about bringing products to the masses. Once you have the printer and the design/program there is no costly molds or quantity discounts for overseas production. If you have the cash, they’ll make you one. If you don’t, buy something you can afford.

Personally it is a little much for my preference, but they offer something no one else (that I have found) has. A clean looking computer mount with a quick release for a light/camera. Removing a light is such a pain in the ass for most combo mounts that I just leave the light on even for day rides. Makes charging a bit more difficult too.

Not a single picture of what it looks like on a bike.

At that price it needs to have some significant aesthetic and/or performance benefits……neither are apparent from their site.

This price is approx x4 higher than most other mounts so they really need to do a strong job communicating the value proposition……they don’t do this. So they won’t be getting my €135 in a hurry.

I am guessing this is being offered simply as a way to satisfy the UCI rule that any eqpt used in the World Tour has to be “commercially available” to the general public.

I’m tempted due to the ability to unclip my gopro (which is what I’d mount there) quickly. But as you say, with no pictures of what it looks like on a bike then I’m not rushing to buy, and I have a very low sensitivity to price when I see something that would work for me.

For reterence I’m using a k-edge dual mount just for the garmin and a garmin mount on to just for the garmin. I found the weight of both was too much for the k-edge.

This could well be the case. Plus, once you have the STL file why not just print one out when you get a customer order.

The product is also right in Silca’s brand wheelhouse. A well thought out, high-end offering at a top-of-market pricepoint (about double a Kedge aluminum mount). There are “dentists” that would easily pay this to bling out their next $12k roadie.

I’m guessing the aero gains are mainly from getting the computer in line with the stem (see Specialized testing below). Josh is active on ST and I’m sure can chime in.

I haven’t seen these on an EF Education EasyPost bike - though they can be hard to spot. (along the lines of your first line about no pictures of it on a bike).

But I’d think you’d have it backwards…they might hand a few out to EF riders in order to sell more to us. I see no measurable performance benefit from these things, so doubtful it’s an experiment in World Tour marginal gains.

When I said there were no pictures …….I actually meant no pics on their website of the item mounted on a bike, have to see it in context to see how well it integrates into the bar and stem.

from the Silca site:
"At the end of 2021, the EF Pro Cycling Team asked us to create the ultimate aerodynamic computer mount to fit the Wahoo computer to their FSA 5D and 6D handlebars. "

not the best photos but go to www.silca.cc they have a couple of straight on photos… I agree they could do better for photos of how it looks on a bike. I think essentially it is for non round bars… maybe there are cheaper options that attach to the bolts on the stem, but probably not as aero or as light. They are 3D printed titanium after all.

Silca isn’t alone here but this is maddening manufacturers do this. It’s almost like they have either never shopped online or looked at their own site and asked themselves whether they are giving their users a good viewing experience to understand the product they are looking to sell.

See that isn’t hard. Add to website!

Thanks for that. Confirms how I thought it would mount. My initial reaction was that my OCD was going to freak out at it being slightly off centre, but then I realised my current setup does exactly that anyway, so fair enough.

I actually quite like it, with my concern now limited to the weight of go-pro and backpack battery plus 530 head unit. At the moment, the mount breaks, no issues I stuff stuff in pocket and sort when I get home. In this case if those bolts break, I’m losing my bars, and that would of course be as I hit a pothole. I’m a total edge case and so not being critical of the silca design here, although didn’t see a weight limit in relation to the lower/combined mounts for lights/gopro/computer.

I agree that it is almost impossible to see how it mounts from the cryptic website photos.

About your stem bolt(s) breaking, that seems extremely unlikely as the load on your stem faceplate and bolts from your handlebar should far, far exceed the miniscule loads (relatively) from the computer/light mount.

It’s the shear load on the bike from the lever of the GoPro that worries me compared to the pure tensile load of the face plate.

In sure the Silva team have thought of this, but in my mind on a descent…

I bought this mount and the computer doesn’t sit flush with my handlebar, it’s tilted up slightly. I don’t love it. I’m using a four bolt FSA stem, YMMV.

I think the strength of this style mount is quite good. Much better than other mounts I’ve broken by hanging too much weight on them.

FWIW I have a cheapo amazon version of this style mount and have hung a wahoo bolt on it from above and a 2-way gopro mount splitter below, with a GoPro Hero 10 + media mod kit, plus a niterider lumina 1800 lumen model from it, all at once. Descended Mt Lemmon full speed. Took some pothole whacks at 40mph. No issues.

I’d guess that Silca’s is stronger, and has less leverage placed on those bolts because of the gopro mount placement.
