I’m looking at getting some new wheels for my bike since I am finally getting serious about cycling and want to return to duathlon and then maybe triathlon.
The new wheels will only be for racing, I have my Shimano R500’s for training, but will be used for longer bunch races (~160km) and triathlons ( 20 - 40). I would like something light and spin fast, aero if my budget can afford, but not so important since I will be doing bunch races, and strong enough for the tough New Zealand roads that I ride on. Preferably alloy as cheaper, with Shimano hub as well.
I am only 66kg, (145) so do not need anything super stiff.
My budget is fairly low (under $800NZD) as I have to pay for these myself, and am only just about to start University next year, so will be looking for some second hand or used wheels.
Any help and information that will push me in the right direction and give me some knowledge would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Aero should be your primary concern, otherwise there is no point having “race” wheels. You will get suggestions of neuvation, performance forte, williams and various other brands not relevant to NZ. They are all great value in the states but loose that if you try to ship them over.
In our market your options are:
American Classic CR420
Grammo Flow 3:0
Easton EA90
www.wheelworks.co.nz custom
All of these options are in the 1500g region, the Flow and EA90 would both require getting a deal somewhere. The 420s would probably be quite good wheels for your weight (far too flexy for me at 25kg heavier). Last I talked with Tristan at wheelworks.co.nz he could do a custom set with 30mm rims, quality spokes and solid hubs for around your budget.
So I would start by contacting Tristan and see what he can do for you. And keep an eye out for any deals on one of those other options I mentioned.
Thanks for that, good to have some relevant information from someone semi local.
I had been considering the American Classics. I may be able to pick up a pair of them off trademe, but I will contact Tristan after I’ve made a bit more money,
Thanks for the help.
