New Poll- bike brands

if you think you’ve seen this poll before, you have if you’ve been here for awhile. it’s precisely the same poll we ran 18 months ago. back then, it was a two-step poll, first, the major production bike brands, next the major custom bike brands for those who wanted to choose custom. we’re running the poll the same way, same wording, same order of bikes, so that we can most closely replicate how we polled before, to see how opinions might’ve changed in the intervening year and a half.

having read your post, i now understand why ridley wasn’t included - their tt/tri offering sucked before bringing out the dean
.

Next time you run this you should have a “don’t care” or “brand not important to me” choice
.

Or you could just not vote…

Or you could just not vote…
Well, I didn’t vote. How is my choice represented in the results? If one is, presumably, taking a poll to better understand a population it would seem to me that telling those who have a certain choice (don’t care particularly about brand) to not vote is not understanding the size of that segment of the population. How many people didn’t vote because their was no choice for them?

also voting for the “brand not important” non-selection.

i suppose i will vote “other”

also voting for the “brand not important” non-selection.

i suppose i will vote “other”
but “other” implies another brand, not that the brand is not important.

I shall vote for the one that fits.

i don’t understand this. we’re not implying that you’re buying the bike because of the strength of the brand. we’re simply trying to express the idea in the fewest words possible. i understand you can’t ride a headbadge. but you do have to ride what’s directly behind the headbadge, namely, the bike. they used to sell generic beer, but they don’t sell generic bikes. they all have a decal. every bike is called a something, and that something is a brand.

you’re either going to buy one of those bikes made by the listed companies, or you’re going to buy a bike not made by one of those listed companies.

or you’re not going to ever buy another bike; or you really do not care what the bike is – you’d be as happy on a 1965 schwinn varsity, a 1985 specialized rockhopper comp, or a 2009 felt b2. if you’re either of these latter two persons, then, yes, there is an option we’ve not placed on the poll that would contain your vote. otherwise, i think we’ve provided a button for you.

what about orbea? that is a major production brand, andnot custom. it would be my choice.

just curious

The question is, what brand of bike do you “want to buy” next? It suggests we have all made our choice are are saving up for it. The choice of other suggests to me that it was meant to mean I want to buy next a brand other than one of those on the list, The different brands have so little difference in performance from my perspective that I don’t care what the brand is. Peer pressure has little influence on me. I currently have a bike I bought at Costco, called a Cadillac. It feels essentially identical to the LeMond I had before, that got stolen. I am quite happy with it as it is an exceptional bike for what it cost (on sale for less than $1,000 - in fact I found out about it from a posting on ST). I guess it is possible I could have spent an extra 5k and be riding 0.1 km/hr faster than I do now, but then I would be worrying about scratching it.

Anyhow, I looked at the poll and didn’t know how to answer it as none of the answers seemed to fit me. That was the purpose of the comment. What is to be learned about the group if some of the group is “excluded” from participating?

So, I guess I don’t understand the reason for the poll. Are you trying to figure out what the bike preferences are of the ST crowd, if any, or trying to figure out which brands have the best marketing departments?

orbea is certainly a worthwhile brand to have on this first list. we’re trying, tho, to have repeatable results. so, this first poll, of three in succession that we ran 18 months ago, consisted of just these brands. you’ll find orbea in successive polls in weeks two and three.

I plan on buying an “Other” TT frame & fork with Campy record components next. So far there are as many of us wanting to buy the “Other” brand as there are wanting to buy a Cervelo.

let me explain what we did the last time we did this poll. there are about 200 bike brands represented every year in the hawaiian ironman. many or most have 1 or 2 bikes in the race. but several dozen brands have a respectable number. there’s simply a space limitation. if we put all those brands on one poll, the column on that right hand side will reach from here to china.

so, we put the brands that have historically been important in the first poll. we run that for a week or so. then we ran another poll that catches the “other” brands. that includes orbea, look, litespeed, and so forth. then we ran a third poll, that specifically targeted custom.

we’re running these polls in a similar way this time, tho, in the second poll next week we’ll make a couple of substitutions. so, your favorite brand is probably going to be listed sometime during the next 3 weeks.

Without a poll I could have figured that Cervello would have ran away with it based on post from this forum (ok I am not a Cervello fan) what is interesting is that there is no clear second place other the the “other” selection. It seems all of the other rans are running at or around 5 percent.

I don’t think Bianchi will make the list? I ride a 06 Bianchi D2 Crono and if I had the cash I would really like to buy the 09 D2 Crono Tri frame & fork. I’m obsessed with Celeste.

my answer would be:

Z) none of the above - i think i would like a cervelo because i think i like the company, and the bikes, but im not sure, and oh-by-the-way - yes i REALLY want to upgrade from my serotta roadbike with clipons but times are tough and i will be scrimping and saving and trolling (and occasionally whoring) the forums making up my unmade-up mind, but when i finally get there than i guess i can answer the poll the way you want - it just may be in a year or 3.

in any case, i voted other.

it’s all going about how your informed observer would’ve predicted it, except for scott. they’re doing much better than they have in the past, and one wonders whether it has anything to do with this:

the poll is only a few hours old, but 36 readers have pulled the lever for scott. maybe some will post here and answer why that is, and if stormin’ normann bent their trajectories toward this brand.

“I don’t think Bianchi will make the list?”

i like bianchis a lot and, yes, no company is more closely associated with a color than bianchi is with celeste.

but i think the likelihood of an american triathlete buying a bianchi TT bike is only slightly greater than an italian road racer buying a quintana roo road race bike.

Quintana Roo makes road race bikes? I thought they just made Tri/TT bikes… (seriously!)
