Pre Katrina, when I did the race there, they were posting water quality data daily and it was not bad. I don’t know what has happened after Katrina. You should be able to find water quality testing data if you google it. I knw the triathlon club was doing open water swims weekly in the lake with no issues. Again…all of this was pre Katrina.
you’ll be fine. Just try not to drink the water.
How is the race?
water was fine last year. i expected it to be really muddy, but just a typical murky lake. race was fun enough that i signed up for round 2 the next day. Best finish I’ve seen in a race. running through the French Quarter with the streets and balconies lined with screaming spectators was pretty amazing. bike had roads completely closed and i didn’t notice drafting problems. The few complaints that I heard were addressed in the changes this year.
I to did this race last year and did not have any issues with the water. I was a great race and the finish was fantastic
Lake Ponchatrain in my opinion gets a bad rap.
We swam there when we were kids. It has its problems, but I think because it is such a measured popular lake that it gets a bad rap. Most lakes are not monitored (IMHO) as much as you run o da mill lake we do most races.
The GNO tri club holds wed swims each week with no one losing and limbs as a result and this has been post Katrina.
Race day last year was great and the fecal count was so called high (whatever their measurements are).
It’s a GREAT race and I am not saying that because I’m a NOLA boy. The run and the finish is so unique it’s difficult to explain.
So - I am no Dr or water PHD - But in my opinion there is nothing to it . . . I would suggest not drinking it.
Any other questions on NOLA 70.3 I’d be happy to help out.
