New Orleans 70.3: Some questions

  1. How are the winds there? Is it possible to use disks wheels?

  2. As I understood, athletes must check in their bikes on Saturday at UNO Tech Research Park. Is it far from the Marriot Hotel? How will you transport your bikes from the host hotel to the transition area, and come back, on Saturday?

Tnx for any advice!

  1. I don’t have a disc, so I cannot answer this question 100% but it can either be dead calm or blowing 20 knots especially along the lakefront and bridges with no trees to block the wind.

  2. Are you talking about the Marriot downtown on Canal Street? If so, that is a ways (6-7 miles) from the UNO Park. I am driving in for the race so will drop the bike off at transition Saturday afternoon, drive and spend the night downtown, then drive to transition in AM for the start, then take the bus back from the French Quarter to get my bike and truck. At least, that is the plan.

I noticed bikes were not allowed on the buses, so I have no clue how one without a vehicle can get the bike to transition without actually riding it and you do not want to ride the streets from downtown to UNO if you want your bike to be race-worthy.

I will offer rides to anyone who wants to ride with me to transition from my hotel downtown to help some of those without a car out.

if the wind does pick up, is it a cross wind or a head on wind? Looks like the bike course is right along the water.

Is it ever windy in the mornings? I heard someone say that if it does pick up it’s mostly in the afternoons.

Is it really that crappy a ride from around the French Quarter out to transition?

As a local that was riding the course before it became the part of the 70.3 here’s my two cents…my only advice is prepare yourself for wind, if you are a good bike handler a disk rear should not be a problem, but chances are there will be wind. It is not uncommon for it to blow a steady 12-15 with gusts in the 20’s, and depending on the direction it will feel worse than that. get yourself and your set up ready for wind, and if it does not blow consider it a gift.

As a local I have been riidng the whole course plus some for a while now. The wind in the morning (we ride at 7) can be barely any to 20 mph plus. Its mostly a head wind or tail wind but sometimes it is a cross wind but thats not the likely senario. You should be OK with the disc. As long as there are no cold/cool fronts coming down the wind should be around 10mph. As far as bike transport I have no clue.

I’m wondering where it talks about bike check in procedures. The website has info on the meeting, packet pickup, and race day but I can’t find anything on the times for bike checkin. Anyone found this?

Nevermind, I found it. In RACE DAY PROCEDURES it tells you to check your bike in the DAY BEFORE between 2-9PM.

2pm - 9pm on Saturday.
