Just dug this news up.
Once again I thought you might be interested.
Just dug this news up. …
You should have dug it up on Slowtwitch: http://forum.slowtwitch.com/gforum.cgi?post=2093661;search_string=ironman%20st%20george;#2093661
Old news.
Just confirmed the new Ironman race with the city manager and got the race details:
Well, that’s good. I was pretty bummed about the disappearance of IMAZ as an early season race. I guess I know what my first big race of 2010 will be…
Will I be able to get a post race beer?
Not sure it is official until it is announced by WTC and hopefully it is a full distance event. I don’t think there will be an announcement for a few more weeks. I will believe it when I can register, but things are sounding more positive. I do think this is a great location for an Ironman event. I have done the St. George Marathon several times and it is one of the best run events I have done. The city and volunteers are great. Perfect for an Ironman event. It will be interesting to see how the course is laid out…could be a somewhat hilly bike course.
God, I can only imagine what they’ll charge for hotels there…Of course you do get to have the Angel Moroni watch over you and your flock when competing…
Hotel costs are not that bad. The marathon has over 6000 runners, many from out of state along with their families. We were always able to find a hotel for a reasonable price. As for the Moroni comment…St. George is obviously in Utah and there are many members of the LDS church that live there. I happen to think that is not a bad thing since the volunteers that help with the race come from the community and can make a huge difference in how well the race is run. Don’t get me wrong…I am not saying that other cities would have less capable volunteers…I am just saying that the likelihood of having a well supported/well run race in this community is very high. I know it sounds like I live in St. George, but I don’t. Been there many times and am excited to see this event possibly coming together.
Obviously you have never been to Utah. They have some of the best beer on the planet. I lived in SLC, for a year and used to bring beer to friends in a growler jug when I visited That was until they changed the rules for carry on items.

Not sure if it is the best on the planet but they have beer there for sure…not the best beer but the best marketing is for Polygamy Porter, bring some home for the wives…
I imagine the LDS folks do not care for those billboards
Isn’t that where they brew Polygamy Porter?

St. George is not the same. Great town, but not the place to find beer, let alone good beer.
After living in UT for a while, I came to the conclusion that the LDS church and its associated businesses are more than happy to take money from "the other’. You will find lots of great coffehouses and breweries in UT, even if Mormons don’t partake.
The race will be on Saturday and if there is a problem and its reschedule for Sunday they will have ZERO volunteers. If you go down to mesquite,nv though you can gamble, buy porn, and they have some great golf courses and liquor stores.

Went to a tennis camp down there, showed up on a Sunday afternoon, trying to find a place open for dinner was like a really really hard scavenger hunt.
I remember the number of places open for dinner and having beer available was like, hmmm, 3 or 4, we settled on a Chilis. Very dissapointed when traveling and having to eat chain food.
Very eery on Sunday afternoons and seeing entire strip malls shut down, very ghost townish.
Besides that, great weather, looked like a great town to train, ride, and live.
Polyg Porter, bring some home for the wives!
I’ll testify. Did business that sometimes involved me being in Provo or Salt Lake on Sundays. Salt Lake was tolerable. Provo, not so much. I’m stoked to see even the idea of an Ironman in the Mountain Time Zone but yes, it’ll have to be on a Saturday and you’ll have to drive to Mesquite for adult post-race celebration.
Oh yeah, how about the awards luncheon/dinner, next-year sign-up, Kona rolldown and other NAS race-related festivities that require volunteers? Good luck finding a caterer in Utah that will work on a Sunday.
If you can’t find a caterer in Utah that offers Sunday delivery you’re a f-ing idiot. Seriously, the perceptions on this thread are pretty damn funny.

The town does not close up Sunday mornings, it’s not as bad as most who have spent little if any time there think. I can guarentee you this much. It will be a beautiful venue with outstanding weather and great people to watch and help out. I’ll bet this will become a popular race and destination. You will be missing out if you dodn’t give it a try, the people there are great.

The perception of Utah, by some, in this thread boarders on comical if it weren’t such an ignorant view. St. George is a fabulous location and should be a great host city. If the event is run 1/2 as well as the St. George Marathon (first wkend in Oct.) then all fears be assuaged. Relax, you can buy beer in Utah and you can find establishments open on Sundays. Not all are Mo-mos here.

I lived in that area for 5 years…most of it as a bartender. I grew up in Pennsyltucky and their laws of obtaining alcohol are more of a pain in the ass than UT. It’s amazing the misconceptions of this state.
