New grips on felt tri bike

I have new grips for my Felt B2 2010. Ordered new ones (black) from Felt to replace the worn and dirty white ones that came on the bike.

How do I get the old ones off and install the new ones? Do I need to take off the brake levers and the piece that they attach to? It doesn’t seem like they will fit over the levers.

Anyone replaced theirs? It seems like a simple project but…

Thanks

Brake levers have to be removed. The grips fit pretty tightly on the bars.

I’m a long time advocate of WD-40 for grip installation. Since early 1980’s actually:) Act’s as a lubricant to slide them on but dries quick and leaves a very tacky connection.

We replaced those things with standard handlebar tape and it’s been much nicer. No twisting and easy to replace… the white ones sure do look funkdafied after a bit.

I did it for a friend without taking off the brake levers – I used rubbing alcohol for lubricant as it evaporates
pretty quickly. The grips stretch quite a bit.

I hated those rubber grips and just cut mine off to replace with normal bar tape. I found with the rubber grips ALOT of moisture built up and stayed…probably not a great thing sitting on the metal like that.

Went with black tape. It gets hot and humid where I live. I was racing the GFT 70.3 last year when I was climbing on the hoods and the damn rubber grip spun around from the sweat and humidity. I almost knocked my teeth out but; somehow didn’t crash even though my chest hit aero bars. The grips are trash and dangerous! Seriously I know you already spent the coin… Return them and tape the bars.

I replaced my Felt rubber grips once and had to remove the brake levers for that. But like most of the others on this thread I have since switched to normal bar tape as the rubber grip would often slide and twist if I gripped it tightly while climping.

We used to use windex to put grips on mountain bikes. It worked great to ease the grip on and dried leaving a tacky connection. If your worried about them slipping use a spray adhesive liberally on the inside of the grip and slide on while it’s wet.

Just a thought, but has anybody ever thought of using the grip tape that is commonly used on golf club grips. There is a tape that goes on the shaft that when moistened is super slippery making it easy to slip the club grips on…but when initially dried almost acts like glue. Only way to take them off on the future is to cut them off. Haven’t tried this of course…but worth the thought if you want to keep the grips rather than tape the bars and are worried about the spinning when sweaty and climbing.

The wrenches at the shop I worked at used hairspray to install grips - and they swore the cheaper the brand, the better it worked, because it dried with a tackier residue.

Be sure you reinstall (any) rubber grips with adhesive so they do not slip when wet. You can find grip adhesive at motorcycle shops or possibly some bike shops (esp in the Pac NW).
Slipping grips are simply a condition of ignoring this step.

A new revelation from a friend last week- use those tapes they sell for tennis racquet handles. they don’t funk as easily, they clean well, are hard wearing, and you can wrap multiple times if you want to. grip is awesome and probably unbeatable when comparing to normal bike bar tape. 5 bucks buys you probably enough for two bikes.
