Or more to the point, help me decide between different tints. What are the differences between the colours? What benefits do they give in different conditions?
I’ve had a pair of Speedo speedsockets with orange lenses for just over a year now. The rubbery bit feels like it’s starting to deteriorate & lose suction…they’ve started leaking & fogging quicker & quicker over the last six weeks or so.
I’d like to buy an identical pair but can’t find the orange lenses anywhere convenient…so my choices are between clear, blue & smoked (grey/black) lenses. Please, no suggestions on different brands/models…I like my speedsockets…just after advice on the tint options available to me.
i would say the opposite… dark or smoke tint is best for open water with the sun reflection. This weekend, ironman arizona swim start and first 2km is facing the sun… always nice to have a good view of what is going on!!!
i thought about that too but could only think of two races all season where we had bright sunlight on the swim…and we only swam looking directly into it for 250m or so (x 2 laps) in each race…something to reconsider perhaps
I should have added the caveat that clear lenses are only poor if you are planning or competing in an open water swim where you anticipate some BRIGHT sunshine.
I bought some blue tinted ones last year before a race for which tinted goggles were recommended. Blue was a mistake as they made the orange buoys look black. Sucked.
When swimming in a tri, unless there are large swells or are just plain slow(mentally) there is no problems spotting the markers. How long do spend with your head out of the water? Every 5 to 10 strokes take a glance as you taking a breath. I understand some people cant swim straight, but the markers are big. Whatever color goglges are you should be fine. Unless there is bright sun-then don`t have clear on.
Do they have to be speedo? Tyr and aqualine are much cheaper. Have just stopped using tyr socket rockets because blueseventy are looking after me in the goggle department. Normally buy several pairs so that I have tint options and use new ones for racing until performance deteriorates and they get relegated to training (when I actually do some). Have found smoke tint to work well in the past 13 years of stroke and stride and peoples tris.
When i first started swimming for tri (Dec 05?) i must’ve tried 4 or 5 different goggles, including some good TYR ones IIRC…picked up a pair of speedsockets thinking “sh*t these bastards are expensive as hell, they must be good”…and sure enough they turned out the best - tightest fit, no leaks, no falling off when diving in the pool/at races (yes i know, partially technique-related), etc…i’ve worn that same pair on every swim to this day
Funny though, got back from the shop this arvo, put the new Speedo case away in the wardrobe…and sitting there on the shelf are a brand new, unopened, untried pair of Oxygen goggles from the AKL Half swag bag - with orange lenses…LOL

I have oxygens from wanaka and the half, they’re pretty good (for me).
OT - my friend who works for Matt T doesn’t know when we’re getting results. I’ll tell him to nag matt tomorrow
If your in a pool the only choice is clear- all others screw with your head or make everything to dark.
For outdoor swimming the only choice is Smoke even for early AM swimming. Chances are you are gonna be look straight into the sun at some point during the swim, you’ll love your dark tinted googles then!
