What I find interesting is that the riders from Visma and Bahrain weren’t very well placed in the TT (7th and 9th were the highest placing for the new helmets). That makes me think that the new helmets are not huge improvements over what is currently available. Maybe a few watts and best helmet is still rider dependent. As outlandish as the Giro is, maybe there aren’t huge gains left in helmets.
Designs that condition the flow in front of the shoulders make sense, but the very forward and pointy cone on the Giro helmet is what makes it look so different and I would guess that this aspect of the design isn’t worth very much drag improvement… particularly since it directs flow under the rider’s torso. I’d say there’s a lot of room for improvement, but the designs will be more of a signature of whomever is leading the design teams, and very limited R&D money relative to other fields.
