New Giant Propel (2023)

This one first got teased a few months back on the Instagram of Tony Martin and was then part of 2 stage victories at the Tour last month. Officially released today. I imagine we’ll be seeing Blum and Iden on this bike in upcoming draft legal races

Overall the intention seeks similar to the Specialized SL7 - an all a rounder that balances aero with weight. I like the way they have handled the internal routing and the way the bottle cages fit with the frame is nice. Clearance for 30mm wide tires.

I’m digging the colors as well as the fact they hit do a better job hitting decent prices than a lot of similar bikes that are coming out.
Advanced SL (top end carbon + Dura Ace) $10k
Advanced Pro (Ultegra or Force) $5800
Advanced (Rival)

Yeah, I really don’t get the crack pipe pricing of the S-brand bikes coming out versus the Giants. With literally the same groupsets. Or the new “hole in the seat stay aero” Trek.

I price shopped new and used TCX’s against Crux’s and it was clown show crack pipe price difference for only the frameset and S-brand logo essentially. Pro 0 versus the S-works.

Giants are always a massive bargain for what you’re getting, IMO.

I love a lot of the new bikes and the tech that is coming out is ridiculous but who is buying this stuff? I do ok for myself but dropping some of this money seems just crazy to me. I get the economies of scale but damn, $10K for a bike is nuts and as was said, since this is a Giant, that’s a deal.

Fingers crossed Giant, Canyon, Cube, and Rose don’t chase the prices of the insanely priced brands. I have to imagine the margins are still good at $10k for a DA level bike.

Looks like a Scott Addict clone to me. Only three years later.

After being on their US site for a couple hours Giant took the bikes down and reposted them a day later with different prices

Advanced SL (top end carbon + Dura Ace) $12,500
Advanced Pro (Ultegra or Force) $8000
Advanced (Rival) $6000

Guessing the original prices They had were a mistake. New prices are more in line to similar builds from Trek, Specialized, etc. Pretty bummed out. For $5800 was ready to pull the trigger on the Advanced Pro. But pretty much have bailed on that idea now

Craziness. The “race bike” category needs to be renamed “trophy bikes” or the like. How soon will it be before we see regular production bikes with top-end groupsets reach the $20K mark? I guess the market will dictate that.

I was almost going to reply to Theref65 earlier and say in Australia Giant have gone from a well valued bike to the same as every other brand years ago. My work colleagues used to froth over the value of a reasonable mountain bike and were all riding Giants but that has now all changed. I guess I won’t be hitting my brother up at his Giant store any time soon still it seems…

Looks like current Olympic gold medalist and Ironman World Champ Kristian Blummenfelt was riding a custom painted (gold of course) new Propel in route to 2nd at Bergen. Not sure how to post an actual pic from instagram but here is a link:

Also, per some chatter on another message board, there is a thought that the ‘updated’ US prices might just be a placeholder until they actually have stock. A guy with a bike shop in Canada had a price list in CAD which converted over to the (lower) prices that Giant originally had on their site. Not holding my breath, but it’d be a nice surprise

US prices were already updated. They were launched much lower and then pricing changed within days

We will continue to see a such high price tags as long as there is a significant demand for high-end bikes. These bikes costing $15k or more are currently selling like hotcakes. I bet it will be few more years until “S” and “P” bike brands will reach $20k, other manufacturers will follow them as always.

Yeah, I mentioned as much in posts 1 and 6. However what I was alluding to was that over at WW in the Propel thread the third post from the bottom on page 6 someone had a price list they obtained from their Canadian based Giant dealer. If you convert them from CAD to USD they are in line with the prices Giant originally listed on their site. So I’m guessing it’ll be one of thee things: (1) the US prices go back to the lower originally listed prices, (2) Giant corrects/raises the prices in Canada from the prices that the dealer was given, or (3) it’s cheaper to buy the bike in Canada.

The optimist is me hopes for #1, the cynic in me says it’s #2, and if it’s #3 I guess it’s good I live ~2 hours from the Canadian border…

I see what you mean now. I thought you meant the USD prices are just a placeholder and they would increase in the future.

Seems doubtful they’d drop the price. More likely the CAD price will increase :frowning:

I’d love to consider a Giant bike, but they can’t seem to figure out their geometry for small bikes. For such a large manufacturer, to have one fork rake for all your sizes and compromise the handling of the smaller bikes seems insane! I don’t want to race on a bike with a trail of 64+ mm. I might pay more for a Cervelo, but at least it will handle like I want and expect.
