This looks like it will make a great head unit. $250 and it has a barometric altimeter! Should give the new PT Joule a run for the $.

how does that give the joule any competition? it doesn’t say anything about ant+sport power data…
<scratch that - product page says ant+sport power: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=160&pID=36728&ra=true >

looks pretty cool. so the new 705 will be out in time for Christmas?
And so does the original article I posted: “It tracks climbing and descending and can receive data from ANt±enabled wattage meters.”
.
This looks like a really great unit - one that I would definitely have purchased instead of the 705 had I known it was coming. I really do wish that they had decided to integrate the standard 305/605/705 mount though, as I have 5 bikes with the cadence/speed meter and the standard mount. I would love to be able to score another computer with a little longer battery life but most of the other features, including (most likely) a bit more aero.
Chris
yeah, I read too fast this morning…

I also think I would have purchased this one instead of the 705 had I known it was coming.
Regarding the 705 mount… that mount is not good at all. Changing the 705 back and forth from Sergio’s TT and road bike renders the mount useless in less than a month. I have replaced that mount more times than I can remember in less than a year.
There is a good reason why they decided to change the mounting system.

The only thing worthwhile on this device is the new mounting system. I mean, seriously? A thermometer?
Why can’t my iphone just do ANT+ ???
Just read about it, and do not really see why I would buy this over the 705 that I have.
Why are some saying they would? Nice to have the mapping feature. Not really any extra battery time
(15 vs 17). So, other than cheaper, but you lose some mount sharing, why?
Dave
I have broken a few of them as well, but after awhile I figured out WHY, and how to fix it. I now purchase them and add a layer of CF to the release tab before I mount it up. I have not broken a modified one yet, and I have them on 5 bikes.

And CF means?
Thanks,

Carbon Fiber. In this case I use some UD fibers to stiffen up the release tab so that it won’t break after 5 releases.
Chris
Smaller, better mount. In a year of owning the 705, I’ve used the map function once and the Virtual Partner twice. The 705 is overkill for what I need. I hate racing with a $500 computer(mostly crits).
So the 500 gives me power readings, on a smaller platform and at half the price.
Okay, I agree. If one can get a unit for cheaper and does not need the map, no reason to get the 705.
Nice to have choices.
Dave
Too bad it doesn’t support HR/speed/cadence workouts like the 305 did. I wonder why they left it out?

I checked closer the specs of the Garmin 500. That new model will go in my son’s TT and Road bike and I will keep the 705 for my MTB. I never really liked the design of the 705 for a TT and road bike.
The main reason I bought the 705 was because of the compatibility with the Quarq Cinqo power meter. There is no need to have such a big screen (and computer) in a TT and road bike. The 705 is IMO better suited to a MTB than a TT bike.

In almost a year of use, I haven’t had ANY problems with the old-style (2 piece) 705 mount (and that’s with nearly everyday mounting/demounting of the 705)…However, there is apparently a newer, 1 piece mount available from Garmin that’s intended to be more “robust”.
Just out of curiosity…but what part of the mount typically breaks for you? Is it the retaining tab, or is it the “loops” on the underside of the “nested” part that the zip ties go through? If it’s the latter, it’s my speculation that you need to tighten the zip ties a bit tighter to prevent the “loops” from flexing too much and breaking. If it’s the retaining tab…well, then tell your son that he doesn’t have to push down so hard when he’s removing it…it doesn’t “click” to release for removal

The retaining tab has been broken only once. What is breaking frequently are what you call the “loops” where the zip ties go through. Interestinlgy I think that they break not because they are too loose as you suggest but more probably because we have been tightening them too much. One thing I am sure of is that they have not been too loose when the mount broke, that is for sure.
I do think that when you are 16 you tend to be a bit less careful about sliding these type of things in and out than when you are older. He is not living with us anymore, so it is kind of hard for me to check in detail how exactly the mount broke. Anyway he has never gotten this type of recurrent problem with any other equipment he uses. I will start using the 705 in my bikes next January We will see if I have the same problems.
Thanks for the comment.

Get your hands on one of the new one-piece mounts and I’m sure you’ll have no issues at all.

Do you have a link with an image of the new mount?
I could not find an image in my search of the new mount. What I did find was some threads in cycling forums where some say they have had problems with the mount and some other owners of 705’s have never had a problem with the mount. It seems though that enough people complained and they had to change the design.
Thanks again.
