New Frame Sizing Problem

Hi. I’m new to the forum and I’ve searched back through to see if anyone else has answered my query but it doesn’t seem so. So, apologies for the tedious and repetitive nature of my post!

Anyway, my problem is that I’m looking for a new frameset for tri (and time trialling). I’ve only ever ridden a road frame before now. I’m pretty tall (as you’ll see below where I’ll post my stats).

I want to get a Cervelo P2C - it looks like the 58 will fit BUT it is not possible for me to try the frame built into a bike before purchasing. Indeed, that’ll be a problem whatever bike I decide on. My bike shop (despite being a tri specialist) doesn’t carry a large stock (or anything in my sort of size, really). I’m in Edinburgh in the UK and the shop just isn’t big enough to carry a big stock - I doubt there are many shops in the UK that will.

I’ve been measured at the shop using bikefitting.com but their system is a little antiquated - the numbers looks ballpark but they (bikefitting.com not the shop) don’t really seem to understand tt sizing - they quote 73.5 degrees in the seat tube.

Anyway, here’s some more information:

  • I like a smaller frame rather than larger - my current road bike is a 580 seat tube (c-c) and a 590 top tube (c-c). I have a 120 stem. It has standard road angles. The head tube is 200mm (+20mm headset stack).

In comparison the 58cm P2C is 560 virtual top, 580 virtual seat and 160 head, which is obviously 6cm lower than my road bike and 3cm shorter, which seems about right to me.

My height would probably indicate that I should ride a larger frame. My mountain bikes are also a little on the small side too, which I like. I ride with a high saddle and low bars on all my bikes.

  • I’m going to be doing every tri distance next year (sprint, oly, 70.3, IM) on every kind of course, including hilly (IM UK 70.3 is very up and down - I may end up on my road bike for that one). I’ll also being time trialling 10s, 25s, 50s and maybe a 100 (all miles).

  • I’m not particularly fast but I’m not slow either. I’ve gone under the hour for a 25 mile tt on a road bike with tri bars.

  • I want to ride steep (78 or thereabouts). I’m pretty flexible and I’ll have a fair amount of time to get used to the position - I’m working on raising my cadence on the turbo this winter.

  • Here are my measurements (mm and inches):

height 1955mm / 76.9 inches
left foot 289 / 11.3
right foot 290 / 11.3
inseam 974 / 38.3
torso 621 / 24.4
l arm 740 / 29.1
r arm 740 / 29.1
shoulder 440 / 17.3

So, does anyone else here ride a 580 Cervelo P2C? What height are you? Are your stats close to mine?

Anyone else my height? What size frame do you ride? How do you ride - steep, slack? Low, high? Got a photo?

Any feedback would be useful. I’m pretty positive that the 58cm will fit but equally, I could ride a 61 or a 56 but it’s impossible to tell without getting astride one. If I order it, then I need to be pretty certain it’ll fit or it’s a lot of money to burn on a white elephant. I’ve emailed Cervelo but I’m not expecting a reply.

Thanks for any advice - and sorry for the lengthy and tedious post.

Take care, Johnny Hall.

I’m a shade shorter than you and ride the same size road bike. Would use a 58 P2C with no spacers. A 56 P2C is the same size as a 58 cannondale and would only be necessary if you were going really low. 61 may limit you a bit on bar height. Can you find a store with a fit bike to replicate the position on just to give you peace of mind that you’re not making a mistake?

On the face of it, a 58cm is looking about right.

There aren’t any fit bikes in Scotland (as far as I know) would you believe it. I’d have to fly to London, which is a bit expensive.

My bike fitting measurements came up with a 595 seat tube and a 575 top tube (with a 73.5 degree seat tube) for a tri bike, but it also came up with a larger road frame than I ride.

The bike shop guy thinks 58 will be good.

I’ve emailed the distributor (as well as Cervelo) to see if there is anyway to get astride a 58cm beforehand.

I’m doing everything I can to see if a 58cm will work. Hopefully someone with 58cm will post here and let me know there dimensions.

Thanks for your help - it’s all appreciated.
