I have a QR Tequilo with about 1500 miles on it. The chain is a bit stretched and I have a new one on order from my LBS. They said I will definitely need a new cog to go with the chain. The components are Ultegra. I hear YES new cog… NO new cog from resident “experts”? What to do my friends???
To answer your question let me tell you what I do
-
I never clean my chain…ever (I am serious about that)
-
When I install my chain I wax it…
-
When the chain gets dirty enough that I would want to clean it - I replace it with a new waxed chain.
-
I never worry about my cogs
The only way that you are going to get cog wear to the point that your chain will not engage is when you are on a chain with SERIOUS streching that causes excess wear on the teeth of the cog. (they will start to look like shark fins). As long as you keep a fresh clean chain that is not “too” streched out on the bike I would guess that a steel cogset is good for 15,000+ miles.
