i am putting on a new srm chain and it seems to be covered in thick stuff…should i wash that off an lube it before i ride?
Soak that puppy in gas or kerosine for about an hour. Remove, wipe down, install and then lube it with Rock N’ Roll Gold (or an inferior lube to Rock N’ Roll). Let the lube sit on the chain overnight, wipe it down good and go for a nice, quiet, smooth ride!
This was just covered not to long ago here, Strong opinions both ways. Some said to remove it all then apply your lube, others said it is better than anything you could put on it and to leave the packing lube alone, and lube latter as needed.
I left it on and lubed later when needed.
Leave the Cosmolene on if it can preserve a WWII for 50 years it is good enough for your chain
.
There that should clear it up, 3 responses,

just put on a new dura-ace chain today, the box states that the chain should be cleaned before using it.
Clean it…lube it…ride it.
The original stuff can make the chain last a long time without rusting. but because the stuff is so thick and sticky, any dirt and grime will be stuck to it and grind away at the chain and the gears.
As said…clean it, lube it, ride it.
