New bike fit supposed to help me, but

I don’t think it does. Tried to get a more conservative fit on my Cervelo Dual, so my fitter switched my seat around and pushed my seat back to be more of a road geometry. However, now i feel like I don’t use my quads or hamstrings AT ALL any more, and I’m getting pain in both calves, at the top, right by my pained IT bands. Please help, I don’t want to have to keep going back! Suggestions? Everything else seems happy (aerobars, etc) and I want to keep riding since running is on the banned list for me right now…

Hi TG

My Dual is set up with the seat in the road position, but with the seat forward and the bars back. My elbows are at roughly 90 degrees. The bars are lifted up with a few spacers, too. It is plenty comfortable.

I have had some issues on longer rides (so far only up to 100ks), but these are more to do with flexibility on my part I think. If you think that may be an issue, Tom Demerley has written an editorial on the bikesport site about meeting the bike half-way.

Hope that helps. Sweet bikes the Duals.

that’s the odd thing, I do love my bike…I was having issues with my rhomboids and traps getting really sore in the aerobars, now having moved my elbow pads out, that seems perfect. but this damn soreness I"m having…plus, I just don’t feel like I"m using my legs properly, since my quads and hams don’t feel worked. is this odd?

Can you post a photo or two. Put the bike on a trainer and spin a bit. Then show us with your feet at 12/6 and 3/9 o’clock. Judging from a photo isn’t the best way of doing bike fit, but might give us more of an idea than your verbal description.

$0.50 says your seat height is the issue. I never found that STA was an issue for me as far as pain - especially on the ITB, but having the saddle too high was.

You could do a lot worse than reading everything that Slowman has written on the subject of tri bike fit and then keep reading until you understand it all.

Then read his whole bikepicker page and try to apply what you know of yourself and your bike to see how well you did. If I would have seen his section on Longleg Craig when I first started, I would not have spent three years trying to make a couple of different bikes fit me that were not meant for me.

And post a picture, if you can. There are some pretty smarth triathletes on this forum.

ok, as soon as I can get someone to, I will! (recent race pix not in yet, and old race pix in old fit…).

Ditto on the seat height issue. I get ITB pain sometimes when the seat is too low.

Just completed the first 200 miles on my Dual. The bike fit was good but I am still in the adjustment mode. I think the article on “Tri Bike Fit” was the most helpful.

But, I agree with the other poster that you should read through Dan’s other stuff, too!

too low? becasue some people have been saying too high…I guess it depends? do you get it on both sides, like I do? I’m getting treatment for the left, because that whne it hurts me when I run, but it hurts both sides when I bike.

Are you riding faster or slower than before? If your performance is as good or better than before, maybe the quads and hamstrings were working too hard in your former position.

I’m riding less than I was before, so its hard to say (I’ve been injured and was tapering). Also, last 2 rides were races and flat, I did really well in, probably better than any training rides, but its hard to tell…I’m more worried about the pain though…Thanks you for your input!

Turtlegirl,

An image is worth a thousand words
.

ok ok!!! I’ll get someone with a digital camera! :stuck_out_tongue:

I can’t answer from personal experience about a too high saddle position. I have heard that it can also cause ITB problems. I have been there and done that with a too low saddle position. Ouch.
