New Balance N9 vs Timex Ironman Run Trainer GPS

Hey all!

I’m debating between these two, but havent found much info online about them, specially on the New Balance model…

For those wondering, I had to discard the Garmin gps watches because I can’t swim with them (405cx and 410. The 310 model was out of my budget)…Also discarded the Timex Global Trainer due to its huge size and constant problems I read online about acquiring the gps satellites…

I don’t care about the gps watch measuring anything while I’m swimming or biking, except chronometer. I’d start it’s gps function on T2 as I go out for my run. I basically just want to put it on, start the chrono as I hit the water and use the gps as I start my run later on…Any owners of any these two units that could throw some inside info on them?

Thanks!!!
Alex

Forerunner 310xt is on sale for $289 w/ heart rate strap, and you can get another $50 off that from Garmin in the form of a rebate of some sort.

dcrainmaker has a review of the Timex. For $150, I decided to bite the bullet and bought one a week ago. so far, i like it. Only weird things I’ve noticed is that the HR zone alert only seems to work if you have a screen displaying HR running and my run yesterday didn’t download correctly. It seemed a little more accurate than the Garmin GPSs for trail running, but both are pretty far off compared to a footpod.

My Timex Run Trainer takes about 10 minutes to acquire the satellites. I leave it out on the driveway and it always searches and searches and then asks if it is inside, because it can’t pick up the satellites. Not recommended.

odd. mine is as fast as a Garmin 310. make sure you have the latest firmware.

Thanks Krull! Ill check out that review…

Have you noticed any unusual delays on hooking up the satellites? How about the software Training Peaks, is this what gave you trouble downloading your run?

Thanks!!

it has synced well to satellites for me. the first use took a little bit, but that’s to be expected. afterwards, it is pretty quick. I’ve used the 305/310, and its similar speed to the 310. i thought maybe faster.

The training peaks software is a little upgraded from the basic account. I haven’t used it too much. You download with the same device agent software as with WKO. My run downloaded with the correct duration & distance displayed, but when i opened the file in wko, it only showed the graph for the first half of the workout and a duration in the workout summary of over 1000 hours. I didn’t spend time to find where the glitch was. I’ve had the Garmin glitch on files, too, so I won’t hold it against the Timex if it was just a one time thing, though.

If you can hold out a couple months my 310xt will be in the classifieds for ~$200 or so. Just waiting on the 910xt to start shipping. I guarantee I’m not the only one and the classifieds will be flooded with 310’s.

Awesome. Let me ask you another quick one…

Can I set the chrono at, say, the start of the swim leg of a triathlon and use only that function all the way through the bike leg, and then switch out on T2 to its GPS functionality to start my run? Or would I have to reset the entire current activity (including the overall chrono time I started at the beginning of my swim) in order to get the GPS started for my run?

The reason I ask is because there is no chance in he!! I can finish an ironman before I run out of battery on this watch if I have the GPS active the entire time…!

Thanks again!

that’s my plan, at least. there’s a “radio” button that brings up a menu to turn on/off the GPS, HR monitor, and/or footpod. you can turn each of them on and off during a workout. I turned off the GPS during a ride with no issues. I think using something like SportTracks or WKO you could save a lap for each sport as a separate workout to make analysis easier, too… haven’t tried it, though.

Awesome review! I cant believe I havent come across this guy for gadget review…

I browsed today all day again to see if i could find some information on the NB N9 gps watch, still nothing. I dont think Im gonna risk it, I’ll prolly play it safe and stick with the Timex watch…

Thanks again for the link.
