Is it possible to find a not-freezing olympic-distance race in April? Location no problem but not international. Need a tune up for HIMFL. Ideas anyone & thanks for suggestions. Not St. Anthonys ~~ the entry fee’s a little rich for me.
Come on down to Galveston for the Lone Star Tri Festival…www.lonestartri.com…April 1…
Thanks, KJ. I’ll take a look at the website. Is the gulf warm enough in April that you could do wetsuitless or at least sleeveless?
should be upper 60’s to low 70’s
.
How about this one:

Last year this was the official run-off tri for St. Anthonys (whatever that means) It’s only 2 weeks out from FL70.3 but I did it as a tune up last year and it worked great for me. It’s a good venue. Pretty low key. Organized by the local tri club. And at $70 it’s really inexpensive. In fact, May is a slow tourism month so you’d probably find places to stay at a reasonable rate.
Oh yea, it’s plenty warm too.
Lavaman on the Big Island.
Thanks for the good suggestions! Looks like there’s a few to choose from! Hawaii, Florida, Texas … anything’ll beat Cleveland!

Come on down for our TriAmerica National Triathlon Series Tour opener in Clermont, Florida on April 14-15. The average temps at that time of year are in the mid 80’s. The featured race will be slightly longer than the international distance this year as we are switching over to our new TriAmerica Distance of 2K-60K-15K. A race at half those distances will also be offered.
Our entry fee is also reasonable and is only $75 through November 30. On December 1 it goes up by $10.

Clermont, tri americas. Pretty good race and the water is not even that cold

Vegas had an olympic distance race in April last year, Rage In The Sage Triathlon. There were about 200 people. The weather was nice and Lake Mead wasn’t that cold. The bike was double out-and-back on the Lake Mead road, with continuous rolling hills and a big-ish climb towards the end. (It killed me, but at least I can blame it on the time of year.) The run was part on-, and part off-road, and was a blast. A good race. Last year it was a USAT age group championship qualifier, but I don’t know if it will be again this year. I’d recommend it.
Fred,
I did the race last year and really liked it so probably driving up again this year. Question: why the reason for the switch from exactly the olympic distance to this new format? I really dont mind since it seems a nice intermediate distance but want to know if there is anything specific behind it. Is the course around the same area as last year.
Peace
Austin has the Cactus Challenge Oly on April 15th. Swim is in a lake that power plant uses for cooling so it’s always warm water.
I think it’s 55 bucks for early registration.
