I live in Michigan. The general plan right now is the take out the camper and go camping some place for 3-4 days. Here are the details -
Two kids - 3 and 4.8; One beagle; Date mid to late August; Low cash;
Need ideads for some place in Michigan to take the kids camping and something to do around that area. Any nice state parks that stand out among the rest in Michigan? I don’t think i’m interested in KOA’s. I have more trees in on all my property than KOA has country wide.
Ludington State Park is a real winner, IMHO. We go every year for 3-5 days, and just got back a few days ago. Beautiful, white sand beaches, great swimming areas, fishing, kayaking, plenty of outdoor activities. You can hike out to the Big Point Sable lighthouse,climb it for $2, or go to the small lighthouse on the breakwater in town. There’s an elk farm near town that is kind of cool, as well as lots of farm markets, etc. Decent antiquing, lots of nice little shops, and the best ice cream ever – House of Flavors. The S.S. Badger comes in and out quite often (car ferry), and is fun to go to the marina area to watch that.
Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee, MI is another good option. Similar to Ludington, but better riding (further north). The water is beautiful, though it might be a bit chilly. The sunsets are as spectacular as anywhere in the country, though I am sure they would be similar in Ludington. The NCT and Big M mountain bike (or hiking) trails are just down the road as well. If you go, make sure you visit the Tuscan Grill for pizza in downtown Manistee. Also, Happy Chappy’s, just a short walk from the park, has an impressive beer selection. It’s also close enough to Traverse City for an easy day trip. Good luck - have fun.

The sunsets are one of the reasons we go to Ludington…
