Need shoes similar to New Balance 1061's

My current pair of running shoes are the New Balance 1060s. I got them because I need a cushion shoe for longer mileages. Also, these shoes have a lot of forefoot cushioning and I like that because I bruised my metatarsals twice last year. Also, these shoes are a good platform for when I wear my orthodics. I went to the local running store today and looked to get another pair. They are sold out of my size so I special ordered a pair. However, I tried on some other shoes and I liked them. They were the Nike Air Pegasus and the Asics Gel Nimbus. I also tried on the Nike Air 360 but they seemed a little odd. I’ve also heard about people running in two different pairs of shoes and end up alternating each pair with every run. I’m thinking about doing something like that. So, help me decided which other pair of shoes to get. I’m kind of leaning towards the Asics Nimbus because others have told me how they liked them as well. I’m kind of leaning away from Nike because of the sweatshops and everything like that.

Oh, I would like a cushion shoe because of my metatarsal problems. I have a high arch. The wear pattern on my current pair is pretty much down the middle of the shoe in the heel and the forefoot. I’m a midfoot striker as well. Also, I’m not exactly a light and nimble runner so that’s another reason why I want a cushion shoe or some other shoe that doesn’t break down quickly. Oh, and I have about 330 miles on my current 1060s.

Thanks.

buy two pairs of 1061’s and put 1 and 2 on the two sets of labels on the tongues.

Bumping for the crowd who is stealing time from their companies.

There’s gotta be someone here with an opinion on running shoes.

I’m a NB 1060 guy also. Last time RoadRunner (roadrunnersports.com) had them on sale, I bought two pair. I just switch them up every other run.

I’ve had to fight the urge to switch things up just for the sake of switching things up, but if you have something that you like and that works, stick with it.

As an aside, I got a pair of Nike Pegasus in my SDTC goodie bag last year and they’re serviceable.

What do you mean by “serviceable”?

And how the hell did you get shoes in a goodie bag for a race?

I mean that the Pegasus work but I prefer my NB 1060’s. I wouldn’t use the Nike’s on a long run, they just don’t feel as well made.

The San Diego Triathlon Challenge goodie bag includes a pair of shoes, 2 tech shirts, a sweatshirt, a cotton t-shirt, 2 pair of socks, two water bottles, swim goggles, a pair of jammers, a box of Gu, bodyglide, a towel and a bunch of other stuff that I’m forgetting.

For a $500 entry fee, that’s pretty nice. Much better than other race entry fees that are close to $500.

Eric,

I don’t see why you are looking to change out of the 1060 platform, especially if you are happy with them. I believe the 1061 is out, and mostly it was a cosmetic change. I love my 1060’s and I am going to switch to the 1061’s the next time I buy shoes (probably in the late summer). I have been told that if you are good with the 1060’s you’ll be alright with the 1061.

Yes, I’m happy with the 1060s. However, they are good, but how do I know if the Nike Air Pegasus or the Asics Nimbus aren’t better for me unless I try them out? They may not feel as good in the store but may break it better or may last longer? I used to really like the Brooks Glycerins but they broke down after 150-200 miles and that just isn’t acceptable to me. If I have a side by side comparison of the shoes, it’ll help me pick out which one is better for me.

I seem to get about 300-350 miles out of my 1060’s. I have stayed in the New Balance line my whole running career so far. I am not sure why. I think I like the company. They seem to do good by their customers (at least me). As a larger runner (high 255 lbs. current and low 185 lbs.), I feel like 350 miles is an acceptable expectation for shoes to last.

Of course there is also the whole thing that to me, change is bad! It is hard enough for me to go to the 1061 much less to go to a new brand. I nearly didn’t sleep for weeks when I switched from the 1023’s to the 1060’s! So there you have it.

I think that if I had to change though, I would try Asics first and then maybe try to find something Saucony. But until I have a reason to change from the New Balance I’m sticking with them.

I’m a big guy, a midfoot striker and used about 5 pairs of NB 1060 series the last years, now I’m running on Brooks Glycerine. Feels good for the long run, but it’s to soft for faster work; it hasn’t got the fast ride NB has. Mizuno wave rider also has got this reactive cushioning, but hasn’t got an upper that fits well on feet that are not average. (The heel(?) is relatively wide compared to the forefoot, with an very light upper this doesn’t feel well on my enormous feet).
Just try it.
