I’m looking to increase the height of the base bars on my bike (Andean). The stem is already at max height. Are there any bars on the market that are angled upwards by at least 5cm? I see several manufacturers have the high option on their tri models but there doesn’t appear to be that many bars in the aftermarket.
As a temporary solution, I installed an old Zipp Vuka Aero bar facing up. Although the height is perfect, it wasn’t intended to be used that way and the shape where the hand position is induces discomfort after a while. Also, the reach is too short so this solution is less than ideal.
Currently looking at OEM cockpits however the proprietary designs of some manufacturers makes this search option rather limited. Any recommendations would be appreciated. TIA
Is the intended purpose to raise the bullhorns for when you’re out of the aerobars, or to raise the aerobar cups and extensions for when you’re in the aerobars?
Easiest solution is to just change out the stem. The Andean uses a standard 1" steer tube, just find a 1 1/8" stem that gets you the rise you need and add a spacer.
I researched that option and have several higher stems in my inventory. Another stem would not only force me to remove the storage box that attaches to the OEM stem, but it would look terrible on this bike. I thought long and hard about this. I’d much prefer to retain the storage box and current appearance of the bike. This is why I prefer to change the handlebars over making any other modifications.
5cm is a lot. You’ll probably need to find something like an old Vision Trimax and cut the upsweep off the end of the extensions. The non-integrated version of the old HED Corsair would probably work for you as well.
Yes, back issues prevent me from riding as low as most people and I’m a lot older than the apparent average on this forum. I believe the Vuka Aero I have on now has a 6cm drop. I probably could get away with 3-4cm but want to be on the safe side. If I’m too low there isn’t anything I can do but being too high is a relatively easy fix by removing a stem spacer or two.
Thank you very much for the recommendation! I had completely forgotten about this Profile Design model. Looks to have fantastic reach as well as a substantial drop, and enough round center width for adjusting my aerobar setup. The aesthetics are also a big plus.
