Need help uploading GPX files to an edge 500

After viewing this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAEM26w0bgg

i’ve been trying to figure out the best way to take a GPX file from a site like www.mapmyride.com and get it to read in my Garmin Edge 500. I’m traveling in Europe and would like to be able to have a rough guide in the event i get off track. Is there a way to convert GPX to TCX formats? What file format does the Edge 500 accept? i’m pretty new to this and quite clueless.

There are a few online converters. I use gpsies.com and i’m pretty sure hou can upload a spatial file and convert it to many other formats. .tcx works as does i believe .crs. Paste the new file into the ‘new activities’ folder.

Alternatively, you could generate your courses in ridewithgps.com and export to tcx format directly. It seems to work well with the edge 500 as well as the forerunner 305. If you use Garmin training center you can also edit the street names rather than just left, right, straight etc.

I can’t recommend bikeroutetoaster.com highly enough

You make your route/course there and can download different formats including tcx

I was in exactly the same situation as you. Going to Europe, have a Garmin Edge 500

I created courses with bikeroutetoaster and downloaded the tcx, then copied to my Garmin

Worked like a charm. The courses show up on your little screen as maps and also tell you how far until the next intersection/turn

Really, really worked amazing.
