Need help racing with Apple Watch 6 and Iphone 11

Okay I don’t know anything about using electronics and data for training or racing. I swim mostly and don’t use a watch for that. I got an Apple watch 6 about 2 months ago from my GF which I really don’t understand the potential of and I have an Iphone 11. So I am at the starting line for a sprint tri…what app should I use on the watch? Heart rate? Workout app and select open water swim? stopwatch? Nothing because I won’t even look at it until I’m exiting the water?

Then comes the bike. I have single sided powertap pedal. I mounted my iphone between the aero bars and used the wahoo app to display my power on my test ride. Is that a good choice? It displayed my power but not my MPH or distance which I found annoying? Probably not using it correctly. What do you guys suggest? How can I get my heart rate reading taken by the watch to display on my phone? and if I start my stopwatch at the beginning of the swim is there a way to get the phone to display the watch time?

I thought I had set up cellular data on my watch but evidently its not done right so I have to go back to the phone store so maybe once that is done some of this stuff will work.

Finally the run, workout app and select outdoor run? Or something else is better? Just take off running and forget about it? Its just a sprint but I think just heart rate would be useful.

Also what if I trade some crypto on my phone or watch while racing maybe I can make enough to pay the entry fee. What else should I be doing? Reading ST? Playing music? I played music in the wahoo app while riding it was cool to do. Hey Siri call my GF that would help pass some time. Just joking here.

Can anyone give me ideas onf a simple setup that would be useful? I don’t think i can master a complicated set up by Saturday.

Honestly, I would leave all the tech at home. I mess up my dedicated tri watch in races occasionally, and I use it all the time. Odds are low you would use a new app on an Apple Watch effectively in a tri the first time. Just enjoy the race and figure out the technology later, after you get hooked on the sport.

Caveats… I have an Apple Watch, and it is a terrible fitness device and a super-terrible triathlon device, even with the best app. I would never use it in a race. If I forgot to charge my Garmin and all I had was my AW, I would race without it.

Agreed. I really like the Apple Watch for normal life wearing. I run with it because it has cellular service and makes it easy to stream music.

No fucking way I’d race with it. Especially over a Garmin.

For a sprint? Forget the tech and just go all out.

If you need data, then I’d look into getting a bike computer like the Edge 130 which is only $200 retail. You don’t need anything for the swim and I assume the apple watch works well as a running watch (never used one).

Try an app like Strava or MapMyRide - they don’t have a multi sport option like Garmin and others do, but they have a watch app and you can record the individual events that way. You will probably need to get into T1 and dry off your hand before it’ll register anything you’re trying to do on the screen after your swim, though. Be prepared to spend a minute or so in each transition ending a workout and starting a new one.

Pedal should work with apps also, I’m not as familiar with your particular power meter but if it connects via Bluetooth it should pair with your phone (as it seems to already), you just need a better app for GPS stuff.

That said… you might get a few races under your belt and see why other watches are preferred in races over the Apple Watch. But it is do-able.

Good luck Saturday!

Trading some crypto on the phone to re-coup the entry free is probably a good idea, since you’ll want to not be out the entry fee when get DQ’d for using your phone during the race… (it can be used to collect data in polace of a cycle computer, but cannot be used in a “distracting manner” during the race)
