After IMCDA I want to drive to Vancouver for some R&R. I know they lifted the restrictions for passports temporarily as long as you have a receipt showing that you applied for one, but I have no passport or receipt. My question is do these passport requirements only apply to flying? Or do I need one for driving over the border also?
Right now, it only applies to flying, so you won’t need a passport at a land crossing… photo ID & a birth certificate is enough
No passports needed right now even if you fly. Too big of a passport backlog and too many of complaints.

Are you sure that’s true? I thought it was changed to allow you to use the application for the passport (instead of requiring the passport) for travel to Canada and Mexico, in response to how long renewal/applications are now taking…
That’s my understanding too. You don’t need a passport to travel by car, but you need either a passport or a receipt showing that you’ve applied for a passport when you’re flying.
Bring us few cases of Gatorade endurance and we will let you in!
Few cases for you, few cases for me too! Endurance is the only drink I can use that does not turn my stomach inside out.
I just sent my Aunt on a hunt for it in Port Huron, MI Sadly, no stores around had any ![]()
I heard a radio report that made it sound that no receipt was required this week but the state.gov website still says you need a receipt. So I stand corrected.
My understanding was the relaxed passport rule only applied to travel to Canada or Mexico via air or sea. I also understand that Canada and Mexico may still require you to have your birth certificate with you regardless of whether you have the passport application receipt. Makes it difficult because in the passport application process they take the original birth certificate. I have a trip to Mexico booked for first week of August and I’m thinking I may need to send off to get another copy of all the birth certificates we may need to replace those taken in the passport application process. Kind of a hassle.
