No discussion on men’s meet going on right now?

Leon Marchand is on another level. His 1:28 split anchoring the 800 free relay is mind boggling. Can he break 3:30 in the 400 IM tonight?

Did anyone see the start of the 50 free? Jordan Crooks was last off the block (questionable start by the official) with a good .1 slower reaction time to everyone else and still found a way to win.

Not only did he go 1:28, the fastest split ever by nearly a second, 30 minutes before that he went the fastest 50 breast split in history - 22.2. 1:36 200 IM making the second place, American Record of 1:38.1 look slow!

He’s going 3:28 tonight in the 400 IM. Stupid stupid stupid fast.

Anytime he has touched the water this year, he has torched the pool and competition. He has no weakness. I think he could win the majority of the individual races.

You think he breaks Phelps 400 IM LCM WR in Paris?

I think it goes down this summer and he flirts with 4:00 in Paris.

The 200 IM was ridiculous. I think he took a total of 50 strokes over 8 lengths. He had almost a body length lead at 37.5.

70% of that race was done underwater for
.

Spot on

Absolutely otherworldly. Reminds me of a few years ago when Caleb Dressel was on his tear rewriting the sprints. I’d put my $$ on 1:45 in the 200 br tomorrow too.

I’ve been watching all the races, and if given the opportunity, think Marchand could win virtually every event, including the 1650. I cannot ever remember a swimmer like this, could win the 100/200 in all the strokes including free, the 500 free, and probably the 1650 too. His in season non tapered 500 would have nearly won this final race, figure he had a 4;04 in him if he could swim it rested. And with a 500 like that, no doubt he could pop up to the mile too.

It is going to be fun to watch him in the olympics in his home country too, just need to get a couple ladies to help him on the mixed relays. The way he swims he could get 9 or 10 medals, how many events are you even allowed to swim at the games??

And I have noticed a lot of guys swimming slower than their prelim times, figure the prelims are more like the final in that it is 100’s that get you top 8 from 9th, and 16th from 17th. Pretty much everyone has to go all out except Marchand, who blazes the front 3/4’s and coasts in on the free for a bit of a break, he is just that good…

And yes it does remind me of Caleb a bit, lets not forget he went a 50 flat 100 breast un tapered, and when he did swim the 200im, he set the American record that just barley got broken in this years race. And his 50 time is still in a different universe from all the best guys in the world here, no one really knocking on the sub 18 door in this meet, even in relay swims. That mid 17 of his flat start might just be out there for awhile, unless Leon takes a crack at it…(-;

Great meet overall, 5 teams had a shot at winning, now the last decade favorite Texas is fighting for a possible 3rd. ASU has been on fire, mostly good swims, but Cal just has too many making both finals. It is their meet to lose now, but it still could happen with a few swimmers just missing a final cut, while others sneak in. I sure wish they would stop giving diving points in this meet, it doesnt make sense anymore and too often a team only wins on the back of a few divers. there is nothing in common with these two sports except they happen in a pool, be like giving gymnastic points to indoor running because they both happen indoors…Maybe they can rid both daylight savings time and diving from swimming at the same time…

Apparently in 5 finals at this meet he’s done 5 fastest ever times. It completely boggles the mind.

I’d say that coach at ASU might have a future, whoever he is.

Question for you tall swimmer, when did they stop doing a pike dive and the straight in rocket one? I guess I must have blinked and just missed the transformation. Used to go high, pike, and then get deep for the underwater. But virtually all the guys now straighten out like an arrow, and just punch a straight hole going forward. Seems like that carries just a tiny bit more forward momentum, and they get deep enough to do their underwaters to the 15m mark.

Marchand is the Eric Heiden of swimming, can crush the 20 second races, all the way up to a 14 minute one. Man I would love to see him swim the 1650 somewhere, seems like he likes playing around with off events, if there even is such a thing for him. That 400IM was insane, Phelps record is definitely going down next time he swims that race. He was what, half second or so off on his last swim? All this SCY swimming is just going to make his turns even better, if that is possible…

I’d say the starts have been that way or heading that way sine at least the early 2000’s when underwaters came back into vogue for good (after not being of super high emphasis for much of the 90’s post Berkhoff).

Honestly Marchand is going to flirt with 4:00 for the LC 400 IM which is mind blowing.

6/6 before tonight’s finals:
50 Br fastest split in 200 MR
100 br fastest split on 400 MR
200 fr fastest split on 800 FR
200 IM
400 IM

Tonight he’s got the 200 BR (1:45??) and the 400 FR (he could flirt with a 39 I bet)
.

After 1650 only 8 points separate Cal and ASU, with only 5 more down to Texas. Lots of swimmers from all teams in both finals of remaining events tonight, so this thing could literally come down to the last relay. Cal is in drivers seat, more final swimmers in top seeds, but a jump in the relay kills any of these 3 teams chances…

So do you lead off with Marchand and just hope the others rise in the clear water, or anchor him and watch a 39 flat relay split??

Leon should be checked for gills. that boy doesn’t need as much oxygen as the rest of his species. He could probably win every event 200 and longer at NCAA’s. He will absolutely destroy the 400M IM WR the next time he swims it tapered, probably Lochte’s 200IM record too.

Ya, for sure test him for gills. I could not believe that he could keep going 15-16 yd underwater even on the last 100 of the 400 IM. He must have some incredible lungs!!! I would be really shocked if he were able to that for the 1650 though; think he might be “brought back to earth” in the longer races. Would be cool to see him go head to head with Booby Funke in the 1650 and/or 1500 LCM, but that will prob never happen.
