After watching the NBA finals, and watching how one could argue that the officiating pretty much determined 3 of the 6 games, I am more appreciate of the sport of triathlon, and the fact that officiating is much less a part of our sport.
Thank goodness that farce is over. Back to the swim, bike, run.
Well I know one of the games in the Eastern Conference finals, Miami shot something like 40 more free throws than the PIstons. I know the PIstons did shoot more from outside but not to the tune of Miami going ot the line every possession and the pistons going 3 times a quarter. Detroit played like crap, shot a horrible percentage, and lost those games by less than 5 points(except the last one). And Miami shot a million more free throws.
COming from a big Mav’s fan, I admit the officiating was questionable, but a team blowing 13 pt. leads in the 4th qtrs. is unacceptable. A team needing defensive stops and turnovers gets them, then proceeds to run down the court only to jack up errant 3’s? Huh? That’s why we lost. And I’m mad as hell right now!
i really don’t watch basketball much anymore… but when ever i turn it on now everyone takes 15 steps to drive to the basket and all sorts of stupid fouls get called all the time. I’ve just never been a big fan.
I think the world cup has been officiated fairly well. I didn’t get to see the US/Italy game. But from what i can tell there isn’t anything that was really obvious in the games i have watched that they have missed… and i have also watched probably half the games.
I don’t know how the NBA does it but i know with the NHL, the games get reviewed after they are over by the officiating commitiee and the refs are told what they should be doing differently or what they missed. At one point i think i heard this was even in the locker room in between periods for immediate feedback. Also if they blatently miss calls or get things wrong they can get fine. It seems to work out well this season was probably one of the best i have seen.
If you think the refs had that much impact on the games you are really not watching the games. What it comes down to is which team plays the best for the longest period of time. The refs are always going to play their part-happens in every sport that has them. They aren’t perfect, they are human. I haven’t liked the NBA for a long time and I thought this was one of the best playoffs/finals in a long time. Just my 2 pennies.
Aloha,
Matt
Fredly ask the French about the officiating. Man they need some sort of replay. That one goal may stop them from advancing with the points they lost from a win to a tie.
At the end it all evens out. If you settle for jumpers all game long as opposed to driving to the basket thats what you are going to get. You can never shoot lights out or at least consistent in a 7 game series against the same opponent. Jump shooters dont win championships.
Besides the Mav were way ahead in 5 of 6, games including yesterday’s and never able to hold on to their leads, missed key free throws, etc. If Shaq would have made 1/2 his FT in the finals Miami wins every game by 10.
I do agree that some of the little stuff they are calling now days, gets annoying and takes away from the players involvment but it goes both ways.
The NBA is 3 1/2 quarters of going through the motions usually there will be several comebacks during that time, its all about the last 5 minutes and the team that dominates and doesnt crumble in those 5 minutes usually wins. That team was MIAMI and The Flash.
What I found pretty funny was Mark Cuban saying that from his understanding of the rule book Wade committed a backcourt violation in Game 5 and that it was a violation in most high school leagues. Unfortunately, he didn’t read the rule book very thoroughly because what Wade did was perfectly legal in the last 2 minutes of a game and in overtimes. Yet another example of how he likes to whine and complain about anything and everything, no matter if he is right. It is entertaining though…
Mark Cuban is kind of crazy, but at least he is involved. Chris Cohan, the Warriors owner, on the other hand is an invisible man. I can’t even remember seeing even a picture of him. I don’t even know if he attends the games because they never show him. No coincedence the Warriors haven’t made the playoffs. I would trade Cuban for Cohan in an instant.
Oh I agree…nice to have an owner who’s involved and has some sort of personality. And he is crazy. But with that kind of money he has the right to be crazy!
Look at the possessions of both teams in the final 6 minutes of the last three games.
Miami looked smooth, poised, and in control.
Dallas looked flustered, confused, and disoriented.
Miami won those last three games by staying within themselves in the final 6 minutes. Obviously this could best be symbolized by Wade making easy layups while The Big Kraut tripped over his own shoes.
The only call I noticed which seemed completely crazy was the ‘foul’ in game 5 when Wade drove to the hoop on that last possession. That one should have gone on.
By your post seems like it, or the play was completely crazy and the ‘foul’ for something else?
Anyways, it doesnt matter they won, the play is clear, he made the FTs.
Unfortunately the Miami Heat are almost unwatchable. People comparing the calls Wade gets to the calls Jordan got are wrong. Wade seeks out contact…he will run/jump/bounce into you whether or not you are on the way to the rim and the refs are giving him the benefit of the doubt on every single one of those. Its ugly to watch because the only choice the defense has is to turn their back and run away screaming…if you don’t you will be called for a foul. Its like Wade can just decide whenever he wants to careen into any defender in any position at an “off angle” (don’t hit them squarely) and can get a call. Its absolutely ridiculous. The call he got on ze german with like 25 seconds to do was typical…come around a screen…dirk just standing there…run hard right into his right shoulder…FOUL! Sheesh.
Its amazing but the refs seem to have a harder time with Wade’s antics than they do judging whether or not Shaq is fouling or getting fouled.
I didn’t have a pony in this race but it took some enormous Maverick f-ups plus some really dubious officiating for the final result. Miami wasn’t exactly grace under pressure either…all in all…UGLY. Now back to the world cup to watch those sniveling womanly athletes see if they can out-act Wade.
