TDY for a few days next month and would like get in a few swims. Staying at the Navy lodge at North Island. Anyone know the best hours to go or is there another pool near by.
I swam in quite a few meets at this pool back in the day: http://www.bbmac.org/
There’s a little google map embedded here: http://www.swimcnsa.org/TabGeneric.jsp?_tabid_=23351&team=sicnsa
Hope that helps a little bit. Enjoy Coronado!
Early morning or late afternoon for the pool on North Island. Early morning or late afternoon for Public Pool by Amphib Base!
Hi there.
I’ve been TDY to FITCPAC a few times, and I usually swim at Point Loma because their hours are pretty flexible and doesnt seem to be so crowded.
THe best Navy pool is located at dryside 32nd street naval station. Open at 5 am, 50 meter laps until 1300, after that, they switch it to 25 meters. Can swim all day! 10 min drive from NI.
If you want to do something fun and different, go play Underwater Hockey at the Plunge in Mission Beach. Makes riding and running easy 'cause you can breathe whenever you want riding and running!
I don’t think they do it in the winter, but if you’re there during the summer, the Sandy Eggo Tri-Club does an open-water swim at La Jolla Cove on ??Friday?? (its been 6 years since I’ve lived there 2x check me) afternoons.

NASNI’s pool, is called Crews pool. Best time is 0530-0730 weekdays. Lunch swim is good too 1100-1300, but on nice days, can get crowded Mon-Thur during the 1st 30 minutes. Be forewarned, that pool is a bit of a hole.
Like the above poster said, the best (military) pool around (besides Miramar) is 32nd st dryside. Located at Admiral Prout fieldhouse. 0500 weekdays too! There is an indoor pool on 32nd st wetside that has been closed and is reopening shortly w/ 0500-0700 only.
A nice hidden gem of sorts, is the SPECWAR Combat Training Tank at NAB Coronado. Yes, this is where BUD/s is conducted. They lend us their pool weekdays from 1100-1300 only. Nice 50m pool but no lanes lines and no backstroke flags. Can get pretty chaotic w/ every other wannabe doing combat side stroke and crossfit in and out of the pool. Be aware, they can bump us at ANY TIME for their classes. I bat about .250 on getting bumped.
Here’s the MWR link w/ pools, times, and locations: http://navylifesw.com/sandiego/fitness/aquatics/
FYI, I believe Pt. Loma is still closed for renovations but would be a stupid long drive for you. You could swim to their pool in about 10 minutes!!!
PM me if you want more gouge.
The Crews pool is the best one on North Island. There is one on the far side of the base where they filmed the Top Gun graduation. Last I was there, it was in bad need of some upkeep. The Crews pool had a lot of BUD/s duds, or guys training for the test in it when I was still swimming on base, just don’t get in a lane with them. Combat side stroke is not circle swim or even lane splitting friendly.
NAB as mentioned has an awesome pool, but I would plan for it to be really cold. That’s if you can get in.
When I was on NASNI, I went down to the Coronado community center pool. In my experience, that is the nicest pool in San Diego County, and there are a lot of nice pools here. The pool is a 50m pool, but most nights it is split sideways into 25yd. Nice wide lanes, very clean, and lot’s of lanes. It was only $2 to swim there last I checked, just say you are a resident, as technically you are living in Coronado while you are there. The pool is just south of NAB right at the start of the Silver Strand. If you can make it to this pool, it will be worth your trip.
