Hello Dan, from the West Coast…San Diego. I’m logged on to follow you every “step” of the way! My niece is in this race for the first time and I’m cheering her on! Thanks for your reports!
Any update on Derek Oskutis in Men’s Pro Division.
good on ya, marcia! brave of you to be up and about at this hour, unless of course you never went to bed!
“Derek Oskutis”
i don’t know. if i can find something out, i’ll let you know. but as of now i’m not getting any printouts with splits. we’re working on that. honestly, absent these printouts, if he doesn’t make his way into the top 5 or 6, i’m not likely to write his name. if it were just the men only, we could cover it deeper. but covering men and women means we have to be in a lot of places at the same time. if i hear something about derek i’ll shout it out.
Thanks for your efforts. Enjoy your commentary. Just a big fan of Derek’s, and now of course, you also.
Andrew Yoder could be the next Lance. His biking ability is outstanding. He comes from Lancaster Pa. . Though I believe he may be training out West. Great Kid. Derek and him have been friendly competitors since high school swimming

Dan…I’m 62 and too old to stay up all night! I did go to bed early, waking to the alarm clock at 2:30 am this morning! Sad at first to read that the race was delayed to rain…only wishing of course that it was here in dry San Diego! …but delighted when I finally read “the women are in the water”! Cat Carson, my niece, is a great swimmer but not all that excited about swimming with fish. She’ll do great in her first triathlon…she’s a “gamer” and loves competition. I’ll be anxious to hear her voice at the end of the race, via cell phone. By the way…it’s fun watching the live webcom at http://nyctmc.org/...5+St-H+Hudson+Pkwy#.
Dan, why has it been difficult for you guys to get complete and accurate start lists of these races ST has been covering? You guys have been the official coverage, shouldn’t they provide that information to your people?
Just got a call from my sister, Cat’s mother. She says Cat’s number is 1200 and that Cat was in and out of the water in great time and looked excited and happy as she rode off on her bike! My sister is from San Diego as well and she says the rain is refreshing! Go CAT!!!
“why has it been difficult for you guys to get complete and accurate start lists of these races ST has been covering?”
usually through the race organizers with whom we are in contact, we get about 90 percent, maybe 95 percent, of the start field. but this race, for example, let’s pros enter up to the day before, as i understand it. our contacts at the race, and these are often press specialists, not hard core triathlon groupies like tim carlson, herbert, jordan and me, just don’t themselves know who’s starting at their races with absolute precision. so, we don’t get to know about certain question mark athletes until we physically see them.
Dan…do you know if Greg Bennett’s wife Laura is racing today as well?
She raced Hamburg ITU yesterday.
i believe laura raced an ITU event in hamburg this weekend, not doing all that well as i recall.
What a fun morning here in San Diego…sitting here with a nice cup of coffee, watching your reports Dan, on the internet and watching Lance and the cyclists on TV, riding into Paris…and waiting for occasional phone calls from my sister in New York City!
The two Becky’s win. Bec and Becky…beautiful women…beautiful racers. Congrats to both!!!
Yoder is very impressive indeed, but wow to Greg Bennett.
Great job Dan! Thanks for the coverage! …and just a note…just because the pros have crossed the finish line, doesn’t mean this aunt on the west coast can go back to bed yet. I’ve got my amateur tri niece still in the race and while she’s off her bike and running through Central park, this aunt is not going back to bed until Niece Cat calls me, following her finish! Mom reported that she was all smiles as she climbed off her bike and ran off to Central Park. Again…Thanks for the coverage Dan and thanks to Slowtwitch for making my morning so fun!
my pleasure.
