Nationals: Worth doing the Sprint too?

Signed up for the Olympic, plan to race as hard as I can. But is it worth sticking around and ‘participating’ in the sprint too?
Hopefully will be soar and tired on Sunday but thought it might just be fun since I could easily be there…

thoughts?

What does the schedule look like? At our (Canadian) Nationals, you’ve got to choose one or the other because of this rule:

Under ITU Competition Rules (rule 2.5i) athletes are only allowed to compete in one event in a 36 hour period (if one of those events is of Standard Distance or greater).

I did both last year and was amazed at how many people didn’t stick around for both while being amazed at how many people flew in for just the sprint.

I think < 500 did both last year and there were > 1200 in the sprint. It may have been more competitive than the oly or maybe it’s bc the field didn’t get strung out as much.

Given that the sprint was a DL AG WC qualifier: why do you think this happened—that there were more entires in the SD race, and/or it was perceived as more competitive than the standard race? Do that many people want to (bike) race in Rotterdam?

To the OP: I’ve done both the standard and sprint races previous to the event being in Omaha. If one is fit, it’s certainly do-able.

The age group draft legal WQ was held in Nola. The sprint distance at the National Championships is non draft.

Why not go for it?

At Edmonton, I did 3 races in 5 days.

At Du Nationals in Bend last year I did 2 races in like 5 hours. This year I am signed up to do 3 races in 24 hours.

I will be “racing” all 3, and just do the best I can do. Only 1 week left to try and stay healthy and go for it.

AFAIK: top 8 from the sprint qualify for draft legal age group world championships. The NOLA event was a second event, also a DL AG WC qualifier.

Isn’t that so lame?

To the OP, sign up for both. But if you qualify for Worlds in the Oly you gotta skip the Sprint.
Ironically I think you can do both Oly and Sprint at Worlds.

This rule has been around for years.

This is why they changed the Penticton schedule so there is an open day between each race so a person could do 5.

For some reason at Rotterdam they put them both on the same day which was really stupid. They have never done this before. At Edmonton and others they had the day off between so you could do them both. No idea what will happen for 2018 Tri worlds. I know the multi-festival is much more attractive to me than the tri worlds now.

am i right that if you want to do a draft legal sprint, that’s not available at natls? you’re pretty much limited just to the oct 7 race in sarasota? i’m not talking about worlds qual, i’m just talking about the ability to race draft legal sprint. there is no actual DL triathlon natl championship race for AGers, correct?

We talking Triathlon or Duathlon?

Bend Nationals Duathlon is having the NDL races, and DL sprint race the same weekend at the same place.

For the Duathlon, on Sunday at Bend, I am signed up for the DL Sprint DU. There is no national champion for DL. Just NDL. The DL Du race feeds 12 to worlds.
On Sat, I am signed up for the NDL DU sprint, and 6 feed to worlds. I am signed up in the morning for the std DU NDL and 18 feed to worlds.

For the Tri, the NDL races are at one place, the DL sprint at another.

So yep, for tri DL sprint, you have to go to Sarasota where they do 12 slots for worlds. Again, a non nationals event.

Now, I expect things will change. They now do rankings together for NDL and DL since they found the scoring really did not change.

Will they only have world quals from a DL sprint in the future, just depends on how popular the DL races are.

So my AG at Bend Duathlon, there are more folks signed up for the DL sprint than the NDL sprint.

We talking Triathlon or Duathlon?

what is this duathlon of which you speak?

i take it there is no requirement for a qualifying race in order to participate in the sarasota race? you just show up as long as the entry is paid, and you can race?

I did both in 2015 at Wisconsin. went 110% in the Olympic (got 3rd in the old fart 65-69 AG). Was totally flat the next day for the sprint but it was fun anyway. My pace for the bike and run was slower than the Olympic event. If you want top your best at the sprint then don’t do the Olympic.

You are correct.

I couldn’t tell if H20FUN actually answered your question, too many words.

Correct. There is no DL race at Nationals in Omaha this year. As Dave mentions, The Duathlon Nationals have a DL Sprint race next week which is a World Qualifier (but not a National Championship). So confusing :-).

Correct. No USAT National Championshp in DL Sprint for AGers

I did both last year and had a blast. I suspect I wasn’t as fast on Sunday after racing Saturday compared to being “fresh” but it was still a great time. If you’re there already, go for it.

Thanks for posting that link. Remarkable

  • only 6 spots at Nationals for Sprint non-draft
  • 12 for the draft legal.

I wonder if the ITU Grand Final at Gold Coast will offer only draft-legal.
What about Rotterdam this year? Will the sprint be draft-legal?

Also, interesting for the Oly distance. Top 18 qualify but you must be present at the awards ceremony.

So yep, for tri DL sprint, you have to go to Sarasota where they do 12 slots for worlds. Again, a non nationals event.

They slot UP TO 12. Only the winner is actually guaranteed a slot. You have to be in the top 12 *and *within the same percentage of the top time as 18th place was in the previous year’s NDL Sprint Championship race. If there aren’t 12 within that percentage, unallocated slots revert back to NDL championship finishers 7th and below.

You are kidding, right. USAT has many different races. Tris, Du’s, cross tri, winter tri, etc.

The only USAT nationals/race you have to qualify for, at the moment, is the Olympic Tri.
They just changed the Duathlon rankings so you need 3 races now, no longer 2.

You should come race with me at Bend next weekend for the Duathlon Nationals. Great location! And USAT put on a great race last year.
I leave in a week.

THe sprint for Duathlon and Triathlon worlds, I believe, the last 2 years have been DL only. Going forward will be the same.

So yep, sprint, du or tri, draft legal only, meaning road bike front bars and no aerobars.

I wish USAT would do 100% of the qual in the DL races, since worlds is DL. It is the money they do not want to lose at the Nationals, or they probably
would since makes no sense to qualify in a race type and bike that is not what can be used at worlds.
