I will be spending a week in July with a cousin on Nantucket Island and don’t want to bring my bike because of other travel plans. The bike rentals I found online are all for mountain/hybrid/comfort bikes. Anyone know where I could rent a road bike or should I just bring my pedals/shoes and get a harder workout on a hybrid? Question #2- What’s the water temp like in early July? Will I be able to swim in the ocean sans wetsuit? I think 68F+ is comfortable. Thanks.
Not sure if you can rent a road bike. Call Young’s and they could tell you. They might not be open yet, though. As for the water temp, I usually go to visit my parents in late June and have done ocean swims in wetsuit without problem. Usually high 60s. I recommend bringing one because you never know if the water will be below 68. Usually, it hovers right around 67-70 in early july, but if it is a cold late spring, or a hot one, that might bump the temps.
My wife and I rented the MTBs when we were vacationing there and even on those we covered on end of the island to the other in less than two hours, on a road bike you would be making laps to get in some miles.
Our favorite vacation spot, enjoy.
I suggest you contact Young’s Cycles (which is right where the Ferry lands) and ask them if they’ll rent you a regular bike. They might be able to do something special.
I swam across the bay in Nantucket in June last year (and will do so again this year) and didn’t need a wetsuit.
