… for the holidays to spend christmas with her family in europe - the kids are with her and my new HED’s arrived today. in addition my boss virtually forced me to take off some days after christmas. so the idea of a SPONTANEOUS BIKE CAMP popped into my head. the problem is that i live in rochester, new york.
so my question to you guys is - how far would i have to drive to find a reliably decent cycling climate. i’m no wimp but mid 50s to low 60s would be great.
any thoughts or recommendations about specific locations, terrain (hilly would be perfect) are highly welcome!
At LEAST South Carolina…I checked Expedia…you could fly into Pensacola FL and hit Panama City for less than $500.00 - or Orlando for about $700.00…that may cost less than driving to someplace and will get you more bike time.
all I have to say is Table Rock, South Carolina. Nice little cabins in the state park, amazing trails for running and the best roads i’ve ridden. Best is, there are great 50-60mile routes for flat recovery/easy days or unlimited trips up Ceasar’s Head or up to the blue-ridge parkway which has some awsome climbs.

i’m definately gonna go there … in april!
no seriously - the place looks georgeous, but i checked the weather forcast - brrrh …
i should have checked weather.com before i posted … i think we can narrow the whole thing down to florida. in my recollection this is a pretty flat state. are there at least some rollers, maybe in north florida (panhandle).
Come on down to Clermont! Great cycling - lots of good roads - cheap hotels - I’ll throw in a couple of day passes at the National Training Center for you. (pool temp is 83 degrees) Go to www.usat-ntc.com for information. Z
Clermont is a great place. Take Ziebart up on his offer. He is affiliated with Ironman North America, by the way. You can probably stay with him, too
They hold the Great Floridian Iron Distance race there. The U.S. Olympic team trained there.
But understand that there is a little known law that permits the importation of HED wheels to Florida, but they cannot be removed from the State. I run a storage facility for HED wheels, so I can handle holding for you until you return.
Here’s a typical hill in Clermont–well, maybe not typical, and maybe stretched out in PhotoShop.
@monk - the wheels left florida just two days ago - you must have missed them …
but as far as i can oversee things now - they’ll be back soon!
@tom - i surfed the web and clermont sounds really great - thanks! and i will definately take you up on your offer (thanks again!) …
now comes the hard part - asking the boss (wife)! she already approved my training/business trip to hawaii in february, i hope she will be fine with this one too … why am i bothering - SHE left ME !
