Hey gang, I got a surprise call from my LBS on Friday telling me the R3 promised for June was here. Check it out:
Weighs 16.79 lbs and has ultegra 12-25 cassette. Whats the cheapest/fastest way to lightness? (Wheels, seat, handlebars what?)

Very nice! My Soloist Carbon came in a little early as well. You can easily get that weight down a bit by getting some slightly better components (scrap those Cervelo brakes, handlebar/stem, etc.) That bike deserves Zero G brakes and some nice wheels! Should be around 14 lbs easily.
Seat is only 165g, so not a lot there. Zero G brakes over those will save 1/2 lb! (but at $400). Those wheels are VERY heavy. I hightly recommend some Reynolds Alta Race (can be had for $550). They are 1511g (lighter than Ksyrium SLs and $200 cheaper AND more aero). American Classic 350s are also pretty cheap and will save another 1/2 lb. Changint the bar/stem (e-bay the old stuff) will also save almost 1/2 lbs. M2 racer skewers are 38g vs. your current ones at almost 100g!
That would be my choices - if you REALLY want to go nuts (all Ti bolts, Nokon cables, new crank, stupid light 40g saddle that I could sit on for 5 mins), check out weight weenies.
Wheels will get you there quickest, unless you have a few extra pounds that you’re wearing.
Thanks for the great weight tips. I think those are great ideas. Are the wheels $550 each right?
To keep it lighter I would be sure you dont install the pedals…oh, and then make sure you are not packing some extra pounds before you pay for weight on the bike…
Nice ride by the way.
What’s YOUR current weight?
Thanks for the great weight tips. I think those are great ideas. Are the wheels $550 each right?
Nope, they are $550 or so for the PAIR! Same hubs as the Stratus (at $1400), handbuilt, hidden aero nipples, 30mm Mid V depth. Check out www.reynoldscomposities.com for details. They can be found online all over. I don’t know why more people don’t know about these wheels. The only downside is that you have to remove the tire to true the wheel because of the hidden (hence more aero) nipples. I also find them laterally very stiff when I’m sprinting (I road race in these when not on my Zipp 404s).
Oh, and don’t worry about the naysayers on the board. We all know it is TOTAL weight you are hauling up the hill, but for many of us, our bikes are our babies and lightweight parts can be for no more than fun. I’ve certainly seen worse on cars for no apparent reason - to each his own. Now, I’m only 157 lbs and I can only lose a couple on me, so I don’t mind “paying” as I find it is my hobby anyway.
You know you need some Zipp 202’s - you know you do.
It’s too bad that yours came spec’d with the wolf fork, rather than the Alpha.
That is my only problem with Cervelo - it seems like the build kit often differs from the spec list. If the bike is going to come with an Wolf fork, then it should be shown on the website with an Alpha fork. Personally, I would be a little upset if I pre-ordered with the Alpha in mind and then the Wolf came. (Isn’t there somewhat of an implied warranty with this?)
You could shave nearly 1/2 pound off of the bike by replacing the Wolf with an Easton fork.
I weigh 178 and race at 168 (Ok only once a year).

Oh, I’ve been looking I once held a pair of Z2s and was utterly amazed. But, as much confidence as I have in my Zipp wheels, these were almost too light to be trusted/believed.
Hooker: the Wolf forks and Alpha Q are the SAME FORKS built both by TRUE TEMPER. If you take off the fork, you will see the sticker on the steerer tube. My Wolf SL fork on my Soloist Carbon was under 300g cut. I would definitely not change the fork (at $300) for ZERO to minimal weight savings with, say an Easton SLX. Gerard went into some detail about his fork(s) a while back. Basically boils down to brand recognition in the U.S. vs. Europe, etc. Actually, I like the Wolf fork a little better because it “appears” more aero (at least to me) than the Alpha Q sub3 or even the aero version.
Guess what’s my answer to your original question
.
I see no pedals, bottle cages… Is this away to reduce weight from a bike…?
sweet!
Syntace F99 stem, maybe some light wheels Rolf Elans maybe… Lighter bars, lighter seatpost, Thomsom Masterpiece is a killer post
Weight set aside, brand set aside Alpha Q has a great RIDE. Many people forget the fact that a fork can change the feel of their bike in a HUGE way. Forks are not something to be changed on a whim for a couple grams…then again I remember the good old days when we all had steel forks and wanted to just toss on an EMS fork…
Yes , you are right. Point taken. But since I am thinking of becoming the weight weenie that RRoof spoke of, I thought I would ask.
Step one - find a stem/bar combo that works for you. I love my Deda Newton stuff, but go with what works for your hands. The stock 3TTT is pretty cheap when compared to the rest of the build. Remove spacers while you’re at it, and use carbon ones if you need any at all.
Step two - get lighter wheels. Keep the Vistas for training wheels. The Alta Race wheels already recommended are a nice price - or check out probikekit.com, as they have some great prices on Mavics. MUCH cheaper than any shop in the States. If it were me I’d train on the Vistas and get some 303s or 404s for serious rides and races.
Step three - Not a weight thing, but I’d go for a Wipperman chain now rather than later. Sell the Dura-Ace one while it’s new and still worth something.
If you’re going to get lower in front, see if your LBS can swap out the dust cap (I have no idea what it’s called, it’s the spacer-type thing that’s the top assembly of the headset) for the short version. It’s basically impossible to get later… I’ve tried.
Since this is the Ultegra build, the website actually states TBD. I would guess it allows them to ship out the frames as soon as ready. Is there a problem with the Wolf?

Yes you are right. This is at an Ohio shop and I live in CA so I did not have my pedals with me. Need to get some bottle cages and I guess I will pop for some carbon ones. Then I can eat another powerbar.
Save your money, buy two Tacx Tao cages. Plenty light and only about $12 each. 38 grams each, if I remember right.
