Prior to about three weeks ago, I had been using the same brand and style of goggle for about the last seven years. I chose it mostly for comfort and it served that purpose well. Through the years, even though I changed goggles frequently, I became accustomed to frequent leaking, less than optimal optics and even a nose bridge that split and broke just prior to a race start, all in the name of comfort.

Recently however, I have had the opportunity to race and train in the Nest Pro™ Metallized Goggle from TYR. Designed with styling the mimics the main stadium at last summer’s Bejing Olympics, here’s how the manufacturer describes the product: “The structural elements of the Nest Pro’s frame creates a unique grid-like effect, similar to the way a bird’s nest is intertwined for support. TPR frame/gasket features dual-injected system with over-molded nosebridge. Patent Pending Nest Frame Technology.”
The difference I noticed between this and my usual goggle was quite dramatic and immediately noticeable. Although my swim volume is not considerable by any means, I believe I have used them enough to have an informed opinion. The first and most important attribute is the fact that after three weeks of swimming, they have yet to leak once. The fit is perfect (at least for me), and I literally have not had to adjust them once during a workout. TYR mentions the following features that set this goggle apart: Polypropylene over-mold nest frame provides unique high-tech structure design Headstrap features patented Glide Clip system which allows easy on-head adjustment. Double VTS (Varied Tensile Strength) silicone headstrap conforms to side of head while flat back straps allow for secure fit. Wide peripheral Cellulose Propionate (CP) lenses feature imbedded anti-fog properties and are UV protected. Soft TPR gaskets for comfortable, water-tight fit. http://i43.tinypic.com/jq4785.jpg
The “glide clip” system seems to work very well for keeping the headstrap in your preferred position. Think Xtenex laces for your swim goggles. And the optics are noticeably better than what I have swam in previously. Even on bright mid-day swims, I have found the “Lunar Metallic” to offer enough glare protection and yet they seem just as clear on cloudy, overcast days. I would highly recommend this goggle. Not only has it proven to be extremely functional, but in my opinion it is definitely one of the most stylish as well. I hope you like them as much as I do.

I need to try a pair of those, i’ve had two friends in the past week raving about them…

Thanks for the reviews. Been trying out the xtenex laces and they are pretty cool.

Your friends are right. You’ll like them. They are dramatically better than any goggle I have tried.

Steve, have you noticed them fogging more than a typical goggle, given their shape and closeness to the eye? Mine fog up easier than my vanquisher-style goggles…maybe its me…

This is a much harder sell than xtenex laces. We’ve all found goggles we like.

Unlike the laces (which I chose to pay for, didn’t do the free ST eval), I’d have to
get a free eval pair of these before I’d switch.

Close to the same cost as my Kaimans, I see no reason to experiment.

There is a reason they are called “kaiman killers”. I used the same goggle as you for years and was amazed at the diffrence when I tried these. You don’t have to change, I am just sharing my experience.

So far no fogging, but I have not swam indoors in them yet, which is where I would normally notice the fogging. Maybe I have been lucky, but they have been sweet so far.

You don’t have to change

Whew! I was afraid you were going to show up at my house and make me wear them.

-Jot

I might. I know where you live. Seriously, not trying to “hard sell” you, just letting people know when I have come across something worth consideration. If you do try them, I would be surprised if you do not like them.

I know. Didn’t consider it a hard sell on the xtenex laces, and even bought them from you.

Goggles are a different beast though.

Plus, you didn’t tell me they’d trim :30 off my 100. Then, I’d be all over them! And if they
came in carbon? I’d pay double!

So you prefer them to Kaimans? That’s interesting (and a massive call). I’ve tried more goggles than I care to think about over many years and Kaimans stand head and shoulders above the rest in my mind. But then mine have never leaked and sounds like yours have.

Do you get the same sphere of vision with the TYR that you do with Kaimans?

Thanks

No, I can’t promise they’ll shave time off your swim split but you will be able to see the cute swimmer next to you a lot more clearly:)

BTW- thanks for buying the laces. I hope you like them.

Wait a minute. You WERE watching me swim this morning!!!

Are you peeping my training Steve Larsen? I rock the 2XU calf sleeves and then you get in on them. I heard a rumor you had moved on to full on compression socks. Now you are cloning my goggle choice. I can’t win with you, then again I can’t catch you.

I do. And like I said, I have been using my previous trusted goggles (kaiman) since 2001. I have tried others along the way and this is the only one that will make the change permanent. In regard to sphere of vision, that is hard to quantify but I have not noticed any decrease in range of visibility. Again, just one guy’s perspective.

As I have said, most of the best ideas have already be seen. So, I pay close attention to what others are using and am always open to trying something new (if I think it will make me faster or help me enjoy more). It doesn’t always pay dividends, but in this case it did. I am glad I was paying attention as you went by. You got any other products I should be trying?

There are these tings called Powercranks. Ever heard of them?

don’t get me started…

This is almost as exciting as having Bjorn review running shoes.

That’s funny. Hey, I am just happy I found something that doesn’t leak. Think what it could do for those of you that can actually swim.
