My logic says: Buy a New Bike!

So…I have a '98 QR TeQuillo, 650cc wheels. Went down to the shop to get some training rims, so I can use my old rear wheel for my trainer, figure I’d put the new rims on the bike for outside.

Looking at the wheels, I’m going to spend $500 for a decent set of wheels with Ultegra cassette. Then I think to myself…why invest more money into this old technology?

Why not sell the QR on eBay? Sell my HED Deep/Jett race wheels too. Then buy a NEW Cervelo P2K with 700cc wheels?

Then of course, I would need new race wheels in 700cc size…hmmm. I have a green light from “the boss”.

I think there is some logic here.

Don’t forget, 700cc is faster than 650cc. There’s an extra 50cc’s in there.

or, I could sell you a set of Velocity Deep V’s cheap! You’ll have to find the extra 50c somewhere else, though.

A new bike is more enticing.

That is VERY funny!

If you are shorter than 5’9, the 650c wheels might work for you even if you switch to a P2K.

As your attorney I would advise you to expedite that purchase. You seem to have caught “the boss” in a good mood and need to take advantage of the momentum. You only have a limited amount of time until “the boss” can change their mind.

Oh yea, I have a new P2K and it rocks. If you can, I would attempt to negotiate the race wheels and bike as a package. Be careful of those LBS owners. They are a squirrelly band and can turn on you. Most of them are only marginally better than lawyers. Trust me, I know. We can smell each other like animals.

Good luck.

very true.

or, since you are in Texas (or does the Tx denote tax?), you can wait until Gerard comes through for Mr. Tibbs and then jump him while he is out for his first ride.

You got a set of 650cc Velocity Deeps? Hmmmm. I might take you up on that. But it’s not as cool as a new bike.

My logic: Because I pursue a lifestyle of fanatical health, I don’t smoke. Thus, I save about $2,000 / year I’d otherwise spend on cigarettes (assuming I were a carton a week smoker… I don’t know what ciggies cost now, but I guess its around $40/carton?).

So, why not take that $2,000 windfall and apply it to your bike?

Problem solved.

Hard to argue with that logic.

we have some 650c Xaeo Lites with blue spokes that have been sitting in our warehouse for quite some time. I would sell you a set for $250

Come to think of it: I think I probably eat that
much ($2K) extra food over a year ;/
.

Don’t think of it that way. Think of it in terms the federal government can understand.

Dude, you can only use that logic if you gave up smoking. You can’t use it if you’ve never smoked

It’s what I’m going to use to rationalise my bike purchase later this year:

Save $30/wk on smokes, $35/wk on travel pass since I’m now cycling & $100/mth on a gym membership, again since i’m now exercising outdoors. Should give me a spare $3k or so.

No beer for a year and you’ve saved enough for your race wheels.

There’s no need to be too drastic about these things

No wheels are worth that.

no question new bike would be cool, always nice to get new toys, especially if the boss okays it. second choice on the coolness ladder would bt the new Spinergys. The Deep Vs are great for training (with nearly new tires) and would certainly buy you a lot more beer…

I was planning to put them on ebay next week, any takers?

If I stopped drinking beer for a year I could buy a lot more than race wheels.

I don’t know and I have 700’s, but read Slowman’s comments in the Tech Center (go to the home page) under Rolling Resistance and read what he says. It sounds as if 65o’s might be faster. Jurgen Zack runs 650’s and he’s certainly no slouch.
