My Garmin Forerunner 225 Optical HR Review

Just got mine from REI. As a smartwatch not very good, as a running tool it’s very nice.

Unless I’m mistaken it’s not supposed to be a smartwatch. It’s a running watch.

I guess I should use the label “activity-tracker”, which they are selling the 225 as. They are selling it as a running watch plus an all-day wearable that is better than a Jawbone or Fitbit device. On the front of the device it flashes stuff like “Move” when you’ve been sitting awhile. In Garmin Connect it tracks sleep, active calories, steps, which is all fed from the watch. It also has your steps and whether you hit your goal. That wasn’t in the 220, which was only good for running.

I have to say I am not too impressed about this review! You compare the HR & distance with your iphone on a 1.6mi low intensity run. You don’t say if it is comfortable on the wrist with the added rubber in the back. You claim that “serious runner” must run 4-5 times per week. My friend run 35min flat 10km with 2-3 run per week. Is he a real runner?

With the test you done, the fitbit would have perform the same I am 100% sure.

Does it lose any functions from the 220? I am especially interested to know if the 225 still has audible PACE alerts.

Thanks!

It has audible and taptic (strong vibration) alerts.

When my 4 year old Nike Sportswatch died (probably non-replaceable battery), I bought the 225.

The Nike looked better, but otherwise, the 225 beats it hands down.

I would certainly recommend this watch to friends who run, but if you are unsure, I would also google dcrainmaker’s thorough reviews.
