My Bruised Tailbone -- HELP!

I generally go mountain biking on rocks & roots about 2-3 days per week. Each session is 2-3 hours. I will generally take some risks and jump whatever I see, bunny hop logs, and bomb some rocky trails & etc…

Preface: I just upgraded my Superfly with a Bontrager Hilo Split-Saddle that came on my new Speed Concept (as I put my Adamo ISM on the TT rig.) I didn’t re-check my saddle height. I will do that tonight. I also went a step further with the temps warming up and I dropped 1 spacer (8mm) and flipped my stem (20 degrees) to get my front end lower***. ***

***1. ***I don’t know if ALL OF THIS is contribution to the pain, or is this just a freak accident?

*Right after my mountain bike session Saturday, I thought I had a little bit of – sciatica nerve – flaring up or that I – bruised my tailbone? I jumped into my car, drove 2 hours home, and when I got out of the car – or tried to – my lower spine/upper ass area was in pain (7/10, 10 is death on the pain scale but with Advil it drops to a 5/10). I never experienced this so abruptly before. It feels like bruised bone but the muscles in that area are effected when I get in/out of bed, chairs and couches. I also inspected for in-grown hairs but I don’t feel any (at the moment…)

*I know I felt really good during most of the XC session, I was climbing very well and I was certainly jumping some of the tabletops and hips with a bit more aggression – but nothing too wild – just a fun endurance ride.

***2. ******In hind sight, I know that I had a slight sensation that my saddle felt too high, but I thought that was from dropping the front end. ***

3. Do you think the Hilo saddle is to stiff for the rocky trails or maybe that it was higher up (then my old saddle) and my body was bouncing off of it harder?

***4. ***Has anyone ever gone through this tailbone “pain in the ass” before and if so, what is your recommendation?

*********5. ******Should my saddle – “height” – on my MOUNTAIN BIKE be – “lower or equal to” – my ROAD/TT bikes? ***

(FYI: I am supposed to race a 10k next weekend that I was really looking forward to. I took off all of Sunday (yesterday), and I will try running tonight to see if hurts. There is no way I am getting on a bike for at least a week.)

I’m experiencing something similar, but not as severe. Will be watching this thread.

72 hours later and it’s a bit better. I stopped the Advil & Aspircream…may start icing again this evening. I ran 6 miles last night (48 hours later) above 10k race pace with no pain, but if I open up my pace - I may have an issue. I still don’t think I can get on a bike.

I am wondering if my spine may be a little out of line? I just can’t get my thumb on it…

I was advised to drop my saddle height and return to my stem position prior to this happening. Most people do NOT think the different saddle did it. I measured my saddle height and it was within 1cm of my first stock saddle.

Thanks!

All it takes is something to start the pain, whatever that may be…but what i found was , … what you do and wear after that can keep the pain going. For me it was Levi blue jeans while sitting in my car. It turns out they have a major seam where multiple cloth panels come together in a big lump right at the tailbone. Quit wearing them till the sore healed.
