My After - a half & half latte!

Just made one of these for myself. Why isn’t this a thing? So good!

Ughhhhh I spent a few months working as a barista. A lady came in once and ordered a “breve” (made with half and half) latte. I almost gagged making it, though I’m sure it just tasted like melty coffee-flavoured Haagen Dazs or something. I expected her to be overweight, but she wasn’t. Maybe she does triathlons.

Why is half & half a thing? Other than serving as the US’s trump card in edging out the competition in the obesity olympics, why does it even exist? In Oz lots of people have their coffee with skim (no fat) milk. Half & half means half skim, half normal. In the US, my gf made the mistake of having a “half & half” coffee and nearly puked. She thought the milk had turned rancid. No, no, she was assured. Americans love it like that. Gross.

Isn’t half and half - half milk half cream?

Yes - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_and_half#Canada_and_the_United_States

In the US, yes it is. Americans really hate coffee.

I went to Timmy’s this morning and ordered a Latty. They must use 2% milk or something fatter. I haven’t drank anything but skim milk for years and always get a skim milk Latty. Otherwise it is like drinking butter to me. I managed to drink the beverage but only cause I wanted the caffeine. Won’t be getting one of those again.

I keep thinking I should try a MacDrink and get a Latty from them but I’m sure it would be as noxious.

So I guess for those of us who drink it black, anyone who puts ANY creamer in the coffee must really hate coffee?

This is the “anyone who doesn’t like things exactly how I like them is an idiot” argument. Brilliant…

Half & half means half skim, half normal.

It’s much worse than you think - half cream, half whole milk! Kinda like drinking a hot coffee milkshake. All you caloriephobes don’t know what you’re missing.

Skim milk is higher in carbs and sugar, half and half has no sugar and 1 carb per serving. I drink breve lattes when I’m severely restricting my carb intake…I bet that’s why she drinks them.

Supposedly the Tim’s latte is 1%.

Then again, maybe not. I see people ordering triple-triple and 4x4 concoctions. 1% milk seems paltry by comparison.

My confusion is why SO MUCH milk is required to offset the espresso. A large latte is LARGE.

Huh! To make skim milk they remove fat from regular milk (so Skim has less than 2% one 1%). They don’t add “sugar” but if they did, would that have been “Lactose”? They don’t add carbs either. You must be thinking of Chocolate milk.

It used to be, but now it’s 3/4 milk 1/4 cream. Source: America’s Test Kitchen

Hate to point out the obvious here, but under skim milk the portion size is 100g, and under half and half it’s one table spoon, which is roughly 15g. So if you take that and multiply it by 6.6, you will find there are more carbs, fat, WAY more cholesterol etc in half & half then there appears. Still fewer grams of carbs then skim milk per 100g, but not nearly as drastic a difference as that app makes it appear to be.

Good Catch! I never took that into consideration! And I ALWAYS look at “per serving” nutrition and calculate accordingly to what I know I’ll actually eat (or not).

I like whole milk for lots of things including coffee. I watch my refined carbs, especially sugars, breads, candy, pretzels etc, but eat tons of carbs as fruit, veggie, etc in my diet. I try to avoid “low fat” food options since they are usually high sugar and processed. Skim milk may have fewer calories than whole milk, but its not much more than water and sugar (lactose is a sugar),

That said, I doubt I’d go for the half & half latte, but whole milk is killer in my latte. I think my friend’s nutrition blog is spot on. Here is her take on dietary fats in general (http://drsukol.teachmed.com/2012/08/26/a-primer-about-fats.aspx ).

My favorite caffeine after is when you drop a shot glass of newly pulled espresso into 5oz of ice cold milk with a pump of vanilla in it… We call them “espresso bombs” but every shops calls it something different.

LOL-- drinking espresso + frothed heavy whipping cream as I read this. Half and half is for wimps.

Adding anything to an espresso is also for wimps, wimp!

touche!
