I’m headed to San Diego next week. My wife has a conference at Paradise Point which is in the Mission Bay area. I’m going to visit some family in the area but other then that I am free to explore.
I’ve been doing my research and am going to do a Sunset Cliffs run and indulge in some good Mexican food that I’ve read about. I may also head east into the canyons and hit some trials.
Can anyone else chime in with some must do’s? I won’t have a bike but am open to any good road or trail runs.
There are some amazing breweries out in San Diego.
My favorite is Green Flash.
Here is a list on this website: http://www.sandiegobrewtours.com/breweries.html
I don’t know if I would go on said tour, but it might be a good way to fully enjoy and not have to worry about driving if you will be by yourself.
As a previous poster mentioned, nice cement pathway looping around Mission Bay. For Mexican food (way too many to list), but a local favorite for cheap take-out in La Jolla /Bird Rock area is Bahia Don Bravo. Don Carlos on Pearl St. is also good. For medium price dining in, I like Verdes El Ranchero.
One of the surest best bets for visiting out-of-towners is doing La Jolla Caves /Cove kayak tour starting at the Shores. Its also happens to be Gray Whale migration season, so that’s a tour option to getting up close and real personal. Must do with the missus. Best shop is Hike Bike Kayak (www.hikebikekayak.com), as they are eco-tour oriented and the owner Dave is a triathlete and IMer.

Bring your wetsuit and do an open water swim in LaJolla cove. You will see some swimming without wetsuits though.
Go for a run in Mission Gorge (Mission Trails Regional Park)
Go see the races at the velodrome
Go look at all the great tri gear and bikes at Nytro and B&L bikes in North County, grab a pizza at Pizza Port in Solana Beach while you are in the area
Go for a walk on the trails at Torrey Pines
Check out the glider park at UCSD and watch the para and hang gliders, then hike down the trail to the nude beach
Watch a sunset on sunset cliffs
Grab a burrito at any of the _____bertos.
If you get all that done, it will be a great trip.
“La Jolla Caves /Cove kayak tour starting at the Shores” - I can vouch for that. We went kayaking there back in October. Just after clearing the breakers, a big ol’ sea lion swam up to check me out. That was cool.
“Bring your wetsuit and do an open water swim in LaJolla cove” - This April when we go back, that’s the plan.
“Go for a walk on the trails at Torrey Pines” - This April.
I would also add, if you have the time: rent a surfboard (Bird Rock Surf Shop), visit the Lamborghini dealership in La Jolla, and run up to Mt Soledad and back.
A swim in La Jolla cove is a must as mentioned. Broken Yolk and Kono’s are right down the street from you in PB for some great breakfast. Torrey Pines State Park is close by and perfect for running. Also, If you head east, Cuyamaca State Park has a ton of trails for running or hiking, about 45 mins from where you’ll be.

Which is better for a run, Mission Trails or Sunset Cliffs?
How many miles of trails are at Torrey Pines?
I have a couple of additional foodie ideas for you. Once you finish ogling over the gear at the Nytro tri store in Encinitas and have finished your “demo” bike ride on the PCH, walk around the corner from Nytro to the Potato Shack for some “manhole cover” size pancakes. You will not be disappointed. Another “cash only” joint, so bring some greenbacks. A great lunch idea after a run on the OB promenade is to go to Hodad’s and have a great burger. Enjoy.
Ah memories…
X2 sunset cliffs, ride or run along pch, walk Torrey pines then umbrella drinks in the cove to ask yourself why Mitt Romney wanted to have a summer vacationer here.
Ah they don’t call it America’s finest city without a reason.
In the meantime I’ll just gloat that I’m in adelaide watching the Tour down under for the summer months.

Thank you everyone! This is exactly what I was looking for. I considered using next week to focus on run training but the La Jolla Cove swim and the kayak tour just got added to the agenda. Completely forgot about the Nytro store so that is on the list too.
Thanks again, much appreciated and keep 'em coming if you have more ideas. I’ll make sure to report back once I return so I can add to the list.
