Musical Inspiration for a Bike Trainer

I’m 50 y.o. or so, and in my basement on a bike trainer. Nothing’s good on TV. want to listen to some music. But not ordinary music. I want to listen to music that will help me get my cadence to 130, 140, etc. I want to listen to a song that will make me jumt out of my saddle with the big ring in the front and 12 in the back. I want a fast tempoed song that will help push me past barriers. What songs do it for you?? All suggestions welcomed.

Thanks, dotmanreds

I don’t think you’re so old that Metallica would be out of the question…I personally listen to a lot more jazz and classical these days, but when I’m in the mood that you describe…I’ll grab Metallica’s Black CD every time.

My musical tastes change a lot… So i’ll get a bit international on you here:

First off… An Australian band. The vines www.thevines.com

Check out their song “Ride” the lyrics just make you want to go out and spin!

Secondly, representing Sweden the hives www.hivesmusic.com/culture.html

Bjorn would be proud… However, I believe he likes more the death metal variety… This sounds more like stuff you might have heard growing up  Their recent track “two timing touch broken bones” is catchy.

Finally, I’ve got to represent Canada… A band that’s getting a lot of play up here Billy Talent. www.billytalent.com Pretty much any of their tracks will get your legs moving.

Hope these help… Cheers

ZZ Top–the fast stuff obviously.

Eagles–James Dean, Life in the Fast Lane

Robert Palmer–Addicted to Love, Bad Case of Loving You, Simply Irresistable.

Chicago–25 or 6 to 4, I’m a Man

I like Tower of Power, because their Bass Player created BALCO. Back on the Streets Again.

First off metallica will put you to sleep, at least it does me. Go to victoryrecords.com. Order just about anything, stay away from the voodoo glow skulls. Put in your CD, turn up the volume, louder. It’s good upbeat training music. All out War, A Perfect Murder are good ways to get some upbeat music and ride fast.

There is only, and will only ever be, one Tower of Power Bassist, and his name is Rocco Prestia. Victor Conte just kept his seat warm for a while…

I’ll go with that. And one drummer, too?

Tower of Power brought my new year in. That lead singer had quite the ability to hit a high pitch and just hold it, and he pretty much did that all night, I don’t think I understood anything other than when he would say “tower of power.”

Tough call. I don’t know if Garibaldi had as “signature” an influence over the TOP sound as Rocco did - but how many drummers are as distinctive on their instruments as someone like Rocco is?

When you mention TOP, the first thing most musicians think of is the horn section, then Rocco, then maybe the drums - except for Bass players; they think Rocco first, and never get around to talking about anything else.

Besides… I really like Herman Matthews; met him when I did some work for Meshell, and he was a swell guy… then again, Bobby Vega is pretty rad, too so - yeah. Just one drummer.

Underworld, Rage Against the Machine, White Zombie, Photek, Prodigy are all artists that can get me cranking on the trainer.

You can also check out the ‘Global Underground’ DJ series for some good techno to keep you rollin’

dotmanred…

this is going to sound funny, but check out aerobic tapes. If you know of an aerobics instructor (or spin instructor) ask them for one of their flyers for CDs. They sell pre-mixed music that has the EXACT beats throughout the CD of what you want. One of my friends bought me several CDs with specific beats to them for my mp3…those cds have saved me from dipping too slow. I have a CD that is current techno, one that is 80s (!) one that is 70s and one I have no clue where the songs came from.

I think they are maybe 15-20 a piece?

Mastodon, Bury Your Dead, Atreyu, Posion The Well, Helmet, Totimoshi, Superjoint Ritual, Down, Pantera…
