Muscle spasm in fingers and toes - help!

This is very strange (to me) and I hope someone can explain it. Lately I’ve been getting very strange muscle spasms in my fingers and toes. It has happened sometime during biking but mainly in occurs in the evening when I’m not training.

One example is my index finger will be forced under my middle finger. The pain is minor and I can easily force it into the right position but until the spasm is gone (about a minute or so) it will go right back under.

The same thing happens with my pinky toe. That hurts more than with my finger does and lately has been happening in the middle of the night which is incredibly annoying. Not every night, just randomly. I get out of bed a walk around for a minute or so and it will usually go away.

My training is no different than it has been over the last few years but this is happening more often lately.

Very strange feeling!!! Any ideas??

Similar to “writer’s cramp,” spasms in the fingers usually results from repetitive gripping tasks. Yours might be due to gripping the handlebars or tools. The spasms are related to muscle fatigue, although sometimes they start after the activity. Check if your toes also curl or grip unconsciously.

If the spasms occur more often or get worse, search the medical term “focal dystonia.”

I’m typing on the computer or my phone all day. Wonder if thats it?? Don’t recall excessively curving my toes but will pay more attention. Thanks!!
