Muncie 70.3 - Looking for Hotel Room

Hi All,

If you have a hotel room for me & the family in the Muncie area on July 6th that you are not going to need, please let me know. I have tried a dozen hotels in Muncie/Anderson and all are booked.
I will of course keep checking as the event draws near but wanted to put this out there in case someone has to cancel their reservation.

Thanks, John

Lots and lots still available.

Indianapolis area isn’t a bad option. Very short/easy drive on I-69. If you can’t find anything, and need some ideas let me know. I spent some years in the Muncie/Indy area.

Thanks. Was not using this site but going one by one and making the call. Lesson learned.
Selected one in Anderson. Hope to find one in Muncie as people cancel closer to race day.
I dislike having to get up and drive very far race morning if I can avoid it.

The race start is actually still quite a drive from downtown Muncie, which is where I’m assuming you were calling. Probably a solid 20-25 minute drive. Its better to find something South of Muncie or on the South side of Muncie at least.

Thanks. Any recommendations on places in South Muncie where you might have stayed?

I’m getting the idea you have never been anywhere near Muncie, In

The area is pretty empty outside of the small towns. You have hotels in Muncie and Anderson. Going south New Castle (I-70) is probably going to be the next area with any type of name brand hotel.

I did the race last year and stayed in New Castle. I did that because I grew up in Logansport and had the intention of being cheap and staying with family, then driving to the race that morning. I had been away long enough to have forgot just how far apart things are there, so the hotel was a last minute thing.

The expo is in the civic center in Muncie. The race is at Prairie Creek. The address they give at the expo is South County 550E (or something close to that). My dash board GPS unit in the Honda refused to accept that or any other name close. I ended up following a local out to the park and setting the location in my GPS as a way point. Turns out the GPS sees that road as Gates Rd. My point is find the park in the day light the day before. Get there early because there is one way in and it backs up quick. There was a line at 5:15.

Beware of the wild life. The guy I was following in that morning hit a skunk and then I ran over it. Besides making the entire parking area smell really bad, I had my car locked in the the 90+ temps and bright sunshine. If you think skunk smells bad in the cool night air, try it in a car with a black leather interior that is about 130 degrees or more after doing a 70.3.

I agree with the comments above. If the hotels in Muncie are full, try Anderson, and then New Castle. There are also a couple hotels in Daleville. The other towns are not much further away than Muncie is. The Horizon Convention Center is where the expo and packet pick-up are located. This facility is in downtown Muncie. Prairie Creek Reservoir (race site) is on the southeast side of Muncie (actually a Selma, IN address) and is easily accessible from all three towns. Race morning, there is only one road in, and yes, it does get busy. Not having the sprint this year will make things much easier for everyone involved as far as parking and traffic goes. There is plenty of parking at the venue. If you have never been to the race, I would recommend driving out there on Friday just so you feel more comfortable on race morning. You can always camp at Harris Chapel church (mile 1 on the bike/run courses) or right at Prairie Creek Reservoir!

I’ve stayed here twice for the race, no problems.

Richmond Indiana is about the same distance as well and they have a nice selection of the national chains. Easy trip back up SR35 to the Lake! About the same distance as Anderson.

Enjoy!

Thanks, I was thinking about Richmond as well. I will check that out too.

The last time I was in Muncie was for the **1993 **Endurathon!

1993 was my first full season in the sport and after 7 stitches in my heal in May did not do the old Endurathon but volunteered that day.
It was HOT, windy and I remember thinking the athletes were crazy! The med tent was PACKED! Many of the volunteers needed an IV/Beer as well and the clean-up took till 10pm that night.

Hats off to anyone that finished that day! I did it the next year. It was event hotter in 94/95!

Just curious. How much would you spend per night to stay in a home within a 5 mile radius of the race site?

YES! I had to have two IV bags after the 93 race and then drive 4 hours home. They started calling my “IV Bag” at work!
Can’t wait to race it again after such a long time away.

Should be plenty at an Anderson exit, right off of 69.

Travelling with family as well (2 kids) so we are opting for the camping route with our travel trailer. Found what looks to be a decent one reasonably close - Kamp Modoc. Appreciate any feedback from locals on this one in terms of the campground and ease/access to race site on race day.

Never been to that campground. You can park at the venue, they have a large campground with hookups. Give them a shout at 765-747-4776 if you have any questions. You can also park a mile up the road at a church if you do not need hookups. They have hosted athletes for us for years and everyone always has a good time. Let me know if you have any questions.

Lee’s inn looks like its the opposite way you want to go. How long does it take to get to the race site from there?

Thanks

I can’t remember exactly but it’s not very far, 15-20 minutes mabye. Most of the hotels, etc in Muncie are on the NW side becasue that’s where Ball State is located.
